The town of Le Puy-en-Velay with its cathedral and the "Black Madonna" worshiped there for many centuries is one of the major starting points in France for the Way of St. James. This leads the pilgrim from here over the southern foothills of the Massif Central to the Pyrenees , from there (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port) then across to Spain and on to Santiago de Compostela, the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater.

Superb view of the Auvergne mountains on the Velay greenway. With a small bench to take a break!

Beautifully situated above the town of Le Puy. Stage destination on the Way of St. James and place of pilgrimage. The whole building complex, not just the cathedral, is impressive, and the cathedral is like the heart of it. Especially the staircase to the cathedral is unique. During the summer months, the facade of the cathedral is part of "Le Puy de lumieres", it is lit up with a spectacular light show like some other sights of the city!!! Don't miss it if you're in town at that time. Every evening from June to September from 9pm to 1am. Other locations include the Rocher Saint Michel, the town hall, the theatre, the Place de Plot and the Saint Alexis chapel.
