A very beautiful summit just before the Pic du Cagire. It offers a very beautiful view of many peaks: Pic de Midi de Bigorre, Aneto, etc. You can also see the Boutx ski resort!

I would like to make hikers aware that this route can become particularly dangerous in winter, particularly because of the ridge towards the Pas de l'Ane which can become covered in ice. In this case, ice axes and mountaineering crampons are essential. 2 people died at this location on 1/1/2025, which triggered access bans. I have taken steps to have these bans lifted while raising awareness in a constructive way. Take the time to find out about the snow conditions before undertaking this hike. Enjoy your walks!

This is essentially a 14km clockwise loop. The ascent to the peaks is pretty well marked out although I’d always suggest downloading an offline route map. It’s not particularly technical just some simple clambering over a few steep rocky sections before the 1st col (Teyech). I wouldn’t fancy that rocky section if it’s frozen mind you. After the 2 stunning peaks the rest of the loop is a few kms along the ridge before turning down back through the forest. If it’s snowy, you’ll very easily lose the path (i did a lot) so another good reason to download the route.

Very pleased to have decent walking boots for this hike. There are sections where the path is very rocky, or grassy, or covered with dead leaves. Also good to be reasonably fit, to have a good sense of balance and a head for heights. As always, the effort is worth it. Tour took 5h30 so not too bad.

This is THE summit of the Comminge. He will surprise more than one by the demands of his ascent.

Often confused with the Pic du Gar. They are brothers and each will offer you a superb panorama.

The Arguenos area, nestled in the French Pyrenees, is defined by several prominent peaks. Two of the most notable are Gar Peak, known for its striking natural beauty and panoramic views, and Pic de Cagire, an iconic peak offering magnificent 360-degree vistas of the Pyrenees.
From Gar Peak, you can expect expansive vistas of the Garonne Valley and surrounding ranges, with distant glimpses of Aneto. Pic de Cagire offers a stunning 360-degree panorama of the high Pyrenean peaks and the surrounding plains in fine weather. Pic Saillant, often associated with Pic du Gar, also provides superb panoramic views.
Yes, both Pic du Gar and Pic de Cagire offer challenging experiences. The loop to Pic du Gar is a difficult 13.5-kilometer route with an elevation gain of 1,168 meters. The hike to Pic de Cagire from Col de Menté is approximately 11.28 kilometers with an 815-meter ascent, featuring steep and occasionally vertiginous sections that require experience.
The peaks around Arguenos are rich in natural features. Pic du Gar features striking limestone formations, steep cliffs, and grassy slopes, and its slopes are home to diverse alpine flora and fauna. The routes often traverse pleasant forests before opening up to the rugged Pyrenean landscape.
The best time to hike is generally during the warmer months. Winter ascents to peaks like Pic de Cagire are strongly discouraged due to dangerous conditions such as ice on the ridge, which requires specialized equipment like ice axes and mountaineering crampons. Always check snow conditions before undertaking winter hikes.
Yes, for those undertaking the challenging hike to Pic du Gar, there is a wilderness hut called Cabane du Pic du Gar. It is located about 5.23 kilometers from the starting point and can serve as a convenient overnight stop.
Safety is paramount, especially on challenging routes. For Pic de Cagire, be aware of steep and potentially vertiginous sections, particularly between the Sommet des Parets and Col du Pas de l'Âne, where hands may be needed for support. Winter conditions can be extremely dangerous with ice on ridges, requiring specialized equipment and experience. Always check weather and trail conditions before heading out.
Beyond hiking, the Arguenos area offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous cycling routes, including challenging road cycling tours like the 'Mente Pass – emblematic passes of the Pyrenees' or mountain biking trails such as the 'Menté Pass – Bergerie du Col de Menté loop'. Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking panoramic views from the summits, especially the 360-degree vistas from Pic de Cagire. The challenging nature of the hikes, the diverse natural beauty, and the opportunity to observe sunrises and sunsets from peaks like Gar Peak are also highly appreciated.
While Gar Peak and Pic de Cagire are popular, you might also enjoy Pique Poque Summit, which offers beautiful views of many peaks including Pic de Midi de Bigorre and Aneto, as well as the Boutx ski resort.
