Der Stausee Kelbra ist ein wichtiger Rastplatz für tausende Kraniche während des Herbstzugs, meist von Oktober bis Dezember. Die Vögel nutzen die "Goldene Aue" als drittgrößten Binnenrastplatz Deutschlands auf ihrer Wanderung in südwestliche Winterquartiere, wobei eine Beobachtung der Tiere von den eingerichteten Beobachtungsstationen aus möglich ist.
