Mount Pizzoc

Highlight • Summit

With its 1,565 m of altitude, Monte Pizzoc is one of the highest points of the Treviso Pre-Alps. The oronym Pizzòc derives from "pits-òc" or "small tip". On its top is the current Piazza della Pace. Inaugurated in 2006, it is the highest "square" in Europe. The area still shows the marks left by the calcium carbonate quarry that was disused before the 1950s. Here, starting from 1962, during the Cold War period, a NATO radar base was housed directly connected to the Pian Cansiglio missile base. Operationally closed in July 1977, it was definitively abandoned on August 21, 1979.

From its summit, on clear days, you can enjoy an exceptional and vast panorama that goes from the Euganean Hills to the Venetian Lagoon to the Gulf of Trieste. To the north, on the other hand, the Cavallo group and the Alpago mountains stand out. To the west, the Cesen - Col Visentin ridge, the Vallata and the Revine lakes. Just below the summit is the Città di Vittorio Veneto Refuge, known as Baracón, as it housed the quarry workers; during the Second World War it was also the seat of the command of the Cairoli Brothers Partisan Brigade.

In the popular belief, the mountain also acts as a meteorological indicator:
- "Se l'à la zhintùra, no'l dùra" or "If it shows the belt of clouds, the good weather does not last";
- "If l’à’ l penàzh, pióva a s’cìh e s’ciàch "or" If it has a plume, rain in pans ";
- "If l’à’ l capèl, al will bèl "or" If he has a hat, it will be beautiful ".

AVABVV Memorial Stone

Highlight • Monument

On Monte Pizzoc there are many scenic trails that allow you to see the details of the plain below such as the lake of Santa Croce, many stop at the Vittorio Veneto Refuge, but it is worth taking the time to explore the other trails as well.

Città di Vittorio Veneto Mountain Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The “Città di Vittorio Veneto” refuge rises at an altitude of 1547 m, a few meters below the summit of Monte Pizzoc, where the current Piazza della Pace is located, used as a lookout point. Here, starting from 1962, during the Cold War period, a military radar control base was built in connection with the launch base located in Pian del Cansiglio. Operationally closed in July 1977, it was definitively abandoned on August 21, 1979.

It is an excellent panoramic point from which to observe the Alpago Mountains, the Belluno Dolomites, the Revine Lakes, those of the Val Lapisina and the Col Visentin-Monte Cesen ridge. On clear days the view sweeps from the Gulf of Trieste to the Euganean Hills passing through the Venice Lagoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Monte Pizzoc — ring tour?

The terrain is quite varied and challenging. You'll encounter dense beech forests, especially within the Cansiglio forest, where paths can be covered in dry leaves. There are also alpine paths, unpaved roads, and some asphalt and paved sections. Be prepared for slippery areas with mixed rocks and grass, and stony ground. The final ascent to the summit can be steep, with some areas requiring attention due to fallen trees.

Is this trail suitable for jogging, given its 'difficult' rating?

While the tour is classified for jogging, its 'difficult' rating and varied terrain mean it's best suited for experienced trail runners. Much of the route, especially steeper and less maintained sections, would be challenging for a typical jog. It demands caution, sure-footedness, and a high level of trail running experience. Some sections might be runnable, but the overall route requires significant effort.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the route?

The primary highlight is the Monte Pizzoc Summit and Piazza della Pace, offering exceptional panoramic views on clear days, stretching from the Euganean Hills to the Venetian Lagoon and the Gulf of Trieste. You'll also pass the AVABVV Commemorative Monument and the Città di Vittorio Veneto Mountain Hut, which has historical significance.

When is the best time of year to visit Monte Pizzoc for jogging?

Autumn is particularly magical, as the Cansiglio forest transforms with vibrant fall colors. However, clear days in any season will offer the best panoramic views from the summit. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required to access the Monte Pizzoc ring tour or the Cansiglio forest?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the trails within the Cansiglio forest or for the Monte Pizzoc ring tour itself. However, it's always a good idea to check local regulations before your visit, especially if you plan to access specific protected areas or facilities.

Is the Monte Pizzoc — ring tour dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Cansiglio forest, it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially given the varied terrain, potential wildlife, and the presence of other hikers. The 'difficult' rating and challenging sections mean your dog should be fit and accustomed to mountain trails.

Where can I park to access the trailhead for this tour?

Specific parking information isn't detailed, but trailheads in the Cansiglio forest area typically have designated parking spots. It's advisable to research specific starting points near the Monte Pizzoc area or the Città di Vittorio Veneto Mountain Hut for the most convenient access.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that are part of the Sentiero Naturalistico H3, Alta via n. 6 delle Dolomiti - XI tappa, and the European long distance path E7 - part Italy. It also crosses parts of the Sentiero del Bracconiere and La Direttissima.

Are there any facilities like huts or refuges along the way?

Yes, just below the summit of Monte Pizzoc, you'll find the Città di Vittorio Veneto Mountain Hut (also known as Baracón). This can be a good spot for a break or to find shelter, and it has historical significance.

What should I bring for a jogging trip on this difficult trail?

Given the 'difficult' rating and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy trail running shoes with good grip, plenty of water, snacks, appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather, a map or GPS device (due to potentially challenging orientation), and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be helpful for stability on steep or slippery sections.

Are there any alternative, easier jogging routes nearby for beginners or families?

While the Monte Pizzoc ring tour itself is challenging, the broader Cansiglio forest area offers a network of trails. You might find easier, less steep forest roads or paths suitable for beginners or families looking for a more relaxed jog. It's recommended to consult local maps or komoot's regional guides for specific, less demanding alternatives in the vicinity.
