This route was planned by komoot.
The full ring tour is approximately 10.7 km (6.6 miles) long and generally takes around 3 hours and 25 minutes to complete. While some sections are comfortable, the overall route is classified as difficult and requires a reasonable level of fitness.
The Komoot tour is rated as difficult due to its length and elevation changes. While some paths directly to Rifugio Rinfreddo are family-friendly, a complete ring tour like this one requires good training. It's best suited for experienced hikers or families with older, fit children.
The tour typically starts and ends at Rifugio Rinfreddo. The refuge offers amenities including free parking, making it a convenient base for your hike.
You'll experience diverse terrain, including forests and pastures, with exceptional 360-degree panoramic views of the Dolomites. The route also features areas of historical significance, such as old military roads and WWI trenches, adding a unique dimension to the natural beauty.
The trail offers continuous panoramic views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks. You'll pass through the Biotope Monte Covolo-Nemes and have opportunities to visit mountain huts like Nemes Hut (Alpe Nemes) and Coltrondo Alpine Hut, which offer refreshments.
The best time to visit is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the trails are clear of snow and the mountain huts are open. This period offers the most favorable weather for hiking and enjoying the panoramic views.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on trails in this region. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through pastures with livestock or in areas where wildlife might be present. Always carry water for your dog.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or access the Sesto Dolomites park area. However, if you plan to collect porcini mushrooms, a permit may be required. Always check local regulations before your visit.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa B07, SICAI Ciclo, and Sentiero Italia - Tappa B08, offering connections to broader hiking and cycling networks.
Absolutely! You'll find several opportunities for refreshments. The tour passes by Nemes Hut (Alpe Nemes) and Coltrondo Alpine Hut, both offering food and drinks. The starting point, Rifugio Rinfreddo, also has a bar and sun terrace.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, bring sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing for changing mountain weather, plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection. A map or GPS device is also recommended. Binoculars can enhance your experience of the panoramic views and wildlife spotting.
The starting point of our hike, Malga Coltrondo, lies on a gentle alpine meadow surrounded by green pastures and dense forests, making it an ideal starting point for hikes in this area. From Malga Coltrondo, the trail led us through the Monte Covolo-Nemes biotope. This protected area is home to an extraordinary diversity of plants and animals and is a valuable habitat for rare and endangered species. The biotope is characterized by moorland, alpine plants, and small bodies of water, which, thanks to their moisture and diversity, are an ideal habitat for numerous amphibians and insects. On the trail through the biotope, we were able to experience nature in its untouched form and repeatedly enjoy beautiful views of the moorland landscape. After 4.9 km, we stopped at the rustic and cozy Nemesalm, another picturesque alpine pasture known for its views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The pasture lies at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters and offers a sweeping view of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another interesting element of our hike was the old border between the County of Tyrol and the Republic of Venice, which we walked along. This historic border, which once separated two important European powers, is now only visible through trail markers and old boundary stones. It recalls a time when the mountains represented not only natural barriers but also political boundaries. Before returning to the parking lot at the Coltrondoalm and concluding our hike with a final stop, we made a short detour to the Rifugio Rinfreddo. The refuge, located at an altitude of approximately 1,880 meters, also invites you to take a leisurely rest and treats hikers to traditional dishes.
A wonderful, relaxed and easy-to-go tour. After Nemes Alpe you should follow the sign to Rifugio Rinfreddo along the road. And not like us, the trail that actually no longer exists. It's nice, but to get to the road we had to climb over a fence. And that is certainly not correct. We stopped at both the Nemes Alpe and the Rifugio. Both were very nice. Parking at the Kreuzbergpass must be paid for upon arrival. I personally find it difficult. When I start a hike, I don't know how long it will last. We paid €10 and still had 1/2 hour left when we returned.
To "warm up" we chose a beautiful alpine pasture circuit on the Kreuzbergpass. First through beautiful forest up to Malga Coltrondo with beautiful gable paintings and a wonderful view, then a short detour to Rifugio Rinfreddo, back again and a little further up through root forest to Alpe Nemes with "bonfortionous" panoramic views. You look and marvel 🤩😍🥰. A quick stop and a delicious piece of buckwheat cake were a must before we descended again over beautiful moorland meadows to the Kreuzbergpass. A really beautiful tour that we would like to repeat again under blue skies and sunshine.
Beautiful patrols in the woods between South Tyrol and Veneto
From the Kreutzbergsattel car park we went along beautiful paths to the Nemes Alpe. Here you have an incredible all-round view. Then we continued across a raised moor to Veneto, where we visited the two remaining huts. On the way back we took a path called the “Shortcut to the Kreutzberg Pass”. This is often used by mountain bikers and is classified S3/S4. This actually applies to some parts, as you can easily see from the pictures. We didn't meet any MTB riders on this stretch. Overall, despite the mixed weather, a wonderful tour that is recommended.
A very nice walk, the snack bar has a beautiful view. The Kaiserschmarrn still has room for improvement. But otherwise, everything was great.
A little less today, that's the plan. The starting point at the Kreuzberg Pass is very popular (large selection of tours). In some cases we are not entirely alone. At least in the area of the two alpine pastures it's no surprise, as you can sometimes get closer with the 🚘. On the way back from the alpine pasture with the donkeys (very impressive animals), I took an “extra detour” and initially followed the Komoot “border path” (yellow/black markings (pictures 27-31). Ok, the idea was really semi-optimal for the first 200m (not again🫣!). After steep and overgrown terrain (but there were markings!), we then went onto a regular, beautiful 🟡/⚫️ path and then a path (including boundary stone!) and finally back to the original tour. The rest of the group came a little later (probably a little less spectacular 😉). The remaining path was again the relaxed version, as planned 🤗. Conclusion: Nice tour, new perspectives (+experiences😀).
A wonderful hike through autumnal meadows and forests and always accompanied by the backdrop of the Dolomites.
