This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as difficult, requiring a good level of physical fitness and sure-footedness. It's comparable to Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) difficulty levels 4-6, meaning it's best suited for experienced hikers with stable footing and appropriate footwear.
The route features varied terrain, including narrow, winding paths that ascend into the mountains. You'll traverse through forests and clearings, encountering streams and small waterfalls. Some sections, especially around the Upper Puente Palo Waterfall, require careful navigation.
Key highlights include the Los Gitanos Viewpoint, offering stunning panoramic views of Marbella and the Sierra Blanca. You'll also pass through the Vereda del Faro with coastal views, and the impressive Upper Puente Palo Waterfall, especially beautiful after rainfall. The Puerto Rico Caves are also along the route.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in this region, it's important to keep them on a leash, especially given the challenging terrain and potential for wildlife encounters. Ensure your dog is also fit enough for a difficult hike.
The best time to hike this trail is typically during spring or autumn when temperatures are milder. After rainfall, the Upper Puente Palo Waterfall is particularly impressive. Avoid the peak summer months due to high heat, and be aware of potential slippery conditions in winter.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required to hike the Mirador de los Gitanos circular trail. However, as parts of the trail are within the Sierra Blanca area, always respect local regulations and leave no trace.
Specific parking details for the exact trailhead can vary. It's advisable to check local maps or komoot's starting point for the most accurate parking information near the beginning of the route, often accessible from areas around Marbella.
Yes, this route incorporates significant sections of other official trails. You'll hike along the Vereda del Faro, and also cross parts of the Marbella - Juanar, Three Valleys Route, and Marbella - Ojén trails, offering a diverse hiking experience.
Given the difficult rating and varied terrain, wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing as weather can change. A map or GPS device is also highly recommended for navigation.
Accessing the best views of the Upper Puente Palo Waterfall might involve navigating past natural barriers and finding small paths and steps. It requires careful footing, especially after rain when surfaces can be slippery.
The trail is located near Marbella, so you'll find a wide range of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options in the town itself. However, facilities directly at the trailhead are limited, so plan to bring all necessary supplies with you.
A very nice tour. Shortly after the start, we had a wonderful dog as our constant companion. Anyone taking this tour should bring water for the dog and a piece of sausage. All the paths were well-paved and safe.
Once again we have found a great hiking area that is very well signposted. Our tour is the route marked purple on the map.... (PR-A-429) Translated the lighthouse trail... Probably because of the many great views all around, as there are several peaks to be hiked. When I look at the time of the hike, you might think it's pretty easy/simple... However, the up and down of the tour is quite exhausting, but the views are great and the vegetation anyway 🌱🌼
The "Lighthouse Trail" in the Sierra Blanca above Marbella is a very nice trail with great views, even if our day wasn't that clear today. However, you should be sure-footed, there are some steeper paths over scree and stone.
The tour is about 1.5 km longer, GPS stopped working at times...
