If you put on normal hiking shoes, you can get over the stones unscathed. We also had sticks with us, so we could better estimate the water depths.

Río Chíllar Gorge

The hike is tough though. You walk constantly through the river until the terminus "Vado de los Patos". The same way back is a little less tricky as it slopes down a bit and goes with the flow of the water. There are some beautiful spots on this tour such as an artificial waterfall and some waterholes where you can swim or bathe. Halfway along the way you walk through narrow gorges and at the very end you have to scramble a bit to get to the last waterfall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Rio Chillar Trail start and where can I park?

The trail typically starts near Nerja, Andalusia. While there isn't a designated official parking lot right at the trailhead, hikers often park in residential areas nearby. Be aware that parking can be challenging, especially during peak season, so arriving early is recommended.

Is the Rio Chillar Trail dog-friendly?

The trail is generally considered dog-friendly, but it's important to keep your dog on a leash, especially in crowded sections and to protect the natural environment. Remember that you'll be walking in water for much of the route, so ensure your dog is comfortable with this.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The Rio Chillar Trail is ideal for the warm summer months in Andalusia (June to September) because you walk directly in the river, providing a natural cooling effect. It's also pleasant in late spring and early autumn. Avoid hiking after heavy rains, as water levels can rise significantly and currents can become dangerous.

Are there any permits or entrance fees for the Rio Chillar Trail or the Natural Park?

Currently, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Rio Chillar Trail, which is located within the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. However, always respect the natural environment and any local regulations.

What is the terrain like and what should I wear for the hike?

The trail begins with about 30 minutes of walking over a dried-up riverbed of gravel. Once in the river, you'll spend most of your time walking through water that is typically ankle-deep but can reach knee height. The riverbed is rocky and uneven. Sturdy, water-appropriate footwear with good grip is essential – old trainers or water shoes are often recommended. Avoid flip-flops. Bringing a change of clothes and a towel is also a good idea.

What are the main attractions or scenic points along the route?

The trail is known for its stunning natural beauty. Key highlights include walking through lush bamboo forests, impressive rock formations, and crystal-clear water. You'll encounter several waterfalls and natural pools, such as the Chíllar River Waterfall and Chillar River Waterfalls. A major attraction is the spectacular narrow gorge known as Río Chíllar Gorge (Los Cahorros), where marble walls rise 30-50 meters high and narrow to less than 2 meters wide.

Is the trail suitable for beginners or families with children?

The first section of the trail, approximately 5 kilometers to the 'Los Cahorros' gorges and the first major pool, is considered easy and suitable for families with children. Many hikers choose to turn back at this point. Beyond this, the trail becomes more challenging with uneven terrain and rock climbing, making it less suitable for very young children or inexperienced hikers.

What makes this trail unique compared to other hikes?

The most unique aspect of the Rio Chillar Trail is the immersive experience of hiking directly in the river itself. This provides a continuous opportunity to stay cool, which is particularly appealing in the hot Andalusian climate. The dramatic narrow gorges and numerous natural pools also contribute to its distinct character.

Are there opportunities for swimming along the trail?

Yes, absolutely! The trail features numerous natural pools and waterfalls that are perfect for swimming and cooling down. Many hikers take advantage of these spots to relax and refresh themselves during the hike.

Is the Rio Chillar Trail a loop or an out-and-back route?

The Rio Chillar Trail is an out-and-back route, meaning you return along the same path. However, you can turn back at any point, making it adaptable to different fitness levels and time constraints. The full return hike to 'Vado de Los Patos' is approximately 16 kilometers.

What's the best strategy for hiking the Rio Chillar Trail, especially with kids?

For families or those looking for an easier experience, it's best to hike the first 5 kilometers to the 'Los Cahorros' gorges and the first major pool. This section is less challenging and offers plenty of scenic beauty and opportunities for splashing in the water. Many hikers choose to turn back here, making it a manageable and enjoyable half-day adventure.

The hike in the Rio Chillar is just amazing. 🌿🌾💦 Contrary to expectations, not too cold in autumn and with the right footwear it is a lot of fun. We only discovered the snake on the way back. Unfortunately dead. Maybe a grass snake? Lots of blue and green and really big.

A wonderful adventure. Almost 10 km through a wild river bed filled with knee-deep, rushing, clear water. Climb over massive rocks and through very narrow gorges. ...and all that at the beginning of February in shorts and a T-shirt. One tip: Be sure to wear sturdy shoes that can get wet through and through (this is guaranteed to happen). Same tour together - more pictures: https://www.komoot.de/tour/1022723242?ref=atd

A unique experience 😍 walking 3 hours in a cool, clear mountain stream through gorges ankle to knee deep. bathe in tubs and use the waterfall as the most pristine shower. We wore Keen sandals which seemed perfect to us. However, most walked with light hiking shoes.

It took us almost 5 hours. Ps: It's a free initiation to canyoning!

The tour mostly leads through the riverbed, very impressive landscape.

After yesterday's heat battle and the weather forecast for today, we decided on a hike that takes place almost entirely in cool water. We drove into Nerja and parked near a weekly market. From there, the path first led through a wasteland, under the motorway bridge, through a former quarry, until after about 20 minutes we came to the river bed, here without water. A little further up, at a waterworks, a large part of the water is diverted for irrigation. But after we passed the waterworks, the adventure of hiking in a river began. If you think you can somehow walk the path with dry shoes, you will be forced into the water at the latest at the first rock face. After we got rid of all shyness to walk in the water, it was just a pleasure, the water wasn't too cold ... it was just great fun. We walked upstream, from time to time there were bathing opportunities. At the end, when large boulders blocked the way, there was a waterfall that over time has formed a bathing pool. We unpacked our bathing suits and refreshed ourselves here as a whole. After a long picnic break we walked back the same way. But the feeling of walking down the river was completely different, boredom didn't arise. When the path in the water ended, I was a little nostalgic... so nice to walk in the water. The adventure was definitely worth it. I wore normal leather hiking shoes. Now they are drying, I'm curious how they look afterwards. Mario was wearing his running shoes, which he washes in the washing machine from time to time anyway, so nothing will happen to that.
