Rifugio Antelao

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Located at 1796 meters, in the locality of Sella di Pradonego, the Antelao Refuge is a wonderful crossing point between the Cadore, which it overlooks as a natural balcony, and the Val Boite. It lies on a grassy saddle under the Crode di San Pietro, with a wide view of Cridola, Spalti di Toro, Monfalconi, and the southern ridge of the Central Marmarole. It is the starting point for the Alte Vie delle Dolomiti n. 4 and 5.

Owned by the CAI of Treviso, it was wanted and built by the writer and mountaineer Alma Bevilacqua (better known under the pseudonym of Giovanna Zangrandi) in 1948 to enhance a little-known area of the Dolomites, which she appreciated and loved during the partisan struggle.

San Dionisio Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of San Dionisio, located on the homonymous hill, is certainly one of the most suggestive and easy to reach destinations in the Valle di Cadore area. From here you can enjoy a spectacular 360 ° panorama over the whole of the Cadore center, the Boite valley and the Comelico with their respective massifs that dominate them. Starting from the south, anticlockwise, stand out Monte Rite and Sassolungo di Cibiana, south-east Cima dei Preti and Duranno, and then the Spalti di Toro and the Cridola. To the north the Marmarole with Cimon del Froppa rise, while the Crode de San Piero and Croda Mandrin anticipate the majestic Antelao. There are many legends about how and why the small church was built. Wanting to get away from the noise of man's work on the valley floor, San Dionisio is said to have chosen this hill to retire in prayer and that the chapel was built in his honor. Due to its dominant position over the valleys below, this peak was chosen to discourage and counterattack the Austro-Hungarian attacks against Tai di Cadore airport. An important base that had trenches, machine guns and a telephone connection with the Calvi di Pieve di Cadore barracks.

Costa Piana Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Costa Piana Refuge is located in an enchanting position at 1610 m above sea level. Its terrace offers a wide view of some of the most beautiful Dolomite peaks such as Antelao, Pelmo, Civetta and the Oltre Piave Dolomites. Completely renovated in 1997, it is the ideal destination for day trips to the nearby Antelao Refuge or to the Church of S. Dionisio. It can be reached from Valle di Cadore by going up a narrow asphalted road for almost 7 km (which becomes a dirt road in the last kilometer and a half).

WARNING. I did this hike after a late spring snowfall. There is, in the trail, an attempt to climb to the small church of San Daniele which I had to interrupt (I couldn't find the path). For the rest, the tour is excellent, especially in summer (there are no problems going up from Antelao to San Daniele)
