This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from areas like Bois Méan or the Pra Paisset parking. These are common starting points for hikes in the Les Orres area, providing access to the southern approach of Col de l'Âne.
This trail is rated as difficult. While some sections, like the initial path through forested areas, are relatively flat, the ascent to the col from Lac de Sainte-Marguerite is described as continuous and can be quite demanding. It's considered a sportive itinerary, especially for the final climb across a scree slope.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll start on wide, unpaved tracks, possibly through forests. It then transitions into vast alpine meadows and pastures, especially around Lac de Sainte-Marguerite. The final ascent to the col becomes rockier, involving zigzags across a scree slope.
Key highlights include the picturesque Saint Maurin Waterfall and the charming Lac de Sainte-Marguerite, which is a popular picnic spot. The trail also offers magnificent panoramic views, particularly from the Col, overlooking the Ubaye Valley and extending to the Alps of Haute-Provence and the Ecrins massif. Don't miss the View from the Col de Plein Voir and the Plein Voir Viewpoint.
As this trail is located within the Verdon Regional Natural Park, dogs are generally permitted but must be kept on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always check for specific local regulations before your visit.
The best time to hike this trail is during the high summer season, typically from late June to early September. During this period, the alpine meadows are vibrant, and the weather conditions are generally most favorable. Chairlifts might also be operational to shorten parts of the ascent during this time.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to hike the South of Col de l'Âne Trail or to access the Verdon Regional Natural Park. However, always respect local regulations and leave no trace.
Hikers often encounter marmots, especially near the trail above Lac de Sainte-Marguerite. The diverse alpine environment also supports various bird species and other small mammals, so keep an eye out!
Yes, the route for the South of Col de l'Âne Trail also passes through sections of the Au Sud du Col de l'Âne, the Route des Grottes de Saint-Maurin, and the Galetas - Coteau de Fèlines trails.
During the high summer season, chairlifts might be available from the Les Orres resort area to shorten parts of the initial ascent. However, sections like the valley leading to Lac de Sainte-Marguerite are not served by lifts, so some significant hiking will still be required.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, it's essential to bring sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing as weather can change quickly in the mountains. A map or GPS device is also recommended, though the trail is generally well-signposted.
A great lap high above the Verdon Gorge and the beautiful blue lake! Once you have reached the top - the climb is quite pleasant - you will be rewarded with intoxicating views of the surrounding mountains and the depths of the Verdon. Breathtaking, grandiose and beautiful! And you are very close to the eagles. It's so impressive how they circle above us. The descent is a little less comfortable, it goes over hill and dale and a lot of scree, but above all it goes down quite quickly. We take a detour through a protected area, which tempts with an excavation site, a cascade and grottos. There are also rare plants to discover, but for us they remained hidden. Then it goes back to the main path and further down, sometimes up a little, then down again, always with wonderful views down to the water. One spot is a bit tricky, the path is very narrow, the abyss is very deep, but there is a wire rope to hold on to and if you don't look down too much, it's fine anyway. The last few kilometers go through the wooded landscape, it's very beautiful, and then you're back at the parking lot. It took us a lot of time for this relatively short hike because there was just so much to look at, discover and marvel at, on the ground, in the sky and everywhere near and far, it was a great hiking experience!
The parking lot is free. The ascent is very steep but offers many great views. Once at the top you have a phenomenal view of the gorges du Verdon. The descent is much more difficult because it is very steep in parts. This is followed by a section with a rope, which is also doable for those who are less afraid of heights. Then the way back stretches, but is rewarded with many beautiful views of the lake. Sturdy shoes, lots of water and a little alpine experience are necessary. Have fun hiking!
Magnificent hike where you'll be amazed 😍 quite a steep climb to go up to the Col de plein voir and very slippery descent after the Col de l'âne (I think I forgot a knee ligament on the descent 🤣
Climb ok, return on painful descent. Favor return on the outward route
Spectacular and very varied day tour!
At km 6, it is better to use the lifeline (cliff) against the wall. But it is a passage more impressive than difficult. Very pleasant walk because we discover the lake and the Verdon from several angles. The holm oak forest provides pleasant protection from the sun. PROVIDE REAL WALKING SHOES !! 😊
