This route was planned by komoot.
The full tour around Lac de Sainte-Croix is generally considered to be of medium or moderate difficulty for touring cyclists. While the komoot tour is rated 'difficult' due to its length and elevation, it features two main climbs: one shortly after Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and another after about 25 km, between Bauduen and Aiguines. The route is mostly on paved roads, but some segments can be demanding, requiring good fitness. For a slightly easier experience, cycling the loop in an anti-clockwise direction is often recommended for more gradual ascents.
The route primarily follows paved tarmac roads, offering a smooth cycling experience for most of the tour. However, some sections, particularly on more challenging variations, might include unpaved segments. The path winds through rolling countryside, past fruit plantations, olive groves, and fragrant lavender fields, especially on the Valensole Plateau.
You'll be treated to stunning views of the lake's distinctive turquoise waters throughout the ride. Key highlights include the Coastal viewpoint, the expansive Valensole Plateau with its lavender fields, and the dramatic Verdon Gorge to Lake Sainte-Croix section. Don't miss the Galetas Bridge, where the Verdon River emerges from its gorges, offering fantastic photo opportunities. Charming Provençal villages like Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Bauduen, and Les Salles-sur-Verdon also provide picturesque stops.
The full 62 km tour, with its 930 meters of elevation gain, is rated 'difficult' and might be too challenging for beginners or young families. However, the region offers many shorter, easier routes around the lake that are more suitable for leisurely rides, typically lasting up to two hours with less elevation. If you're a beginner, consider exploring specific, flatter sections or shorter loops rather than the entire circuit.
You can find parking in the charming villages around the lake, such as Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Bauduen, or Les Salles-sur-Verdon. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is a popular starting point and offers several parking areas, though they can fill up quickly during peak season. Arriving early is advisable, especially on weekends or during summer months.
The best time to cycle is typically from spring (April-May) through early autumn (September-October). During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and the scenery is vibrant, with wildflowers in spring and the famous lavender fields blooming in June and July on the Valensole plateau. Summer (July-August) can be very hot, making cycling more challenging, and the routes can be more crowded. Winters are generally mild but can be wet.
Dogs are generally allowed on the public roads and trails around Lac de Sainte-Croix, but they must be kept on a leash, especially in populated areas and during wildlife nesting seasons. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you clean up after them. Be mindful of the heat during summer months, as the tarmac can get very hot for their paws.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the public roads and trails within the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon, where Lac de Sainte-Croix is located. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning protected natural areas, and adhere to any signage regarding access or activities.
Yes, the Tour of Lac de Sainte-Croix route shares sections with several other trails. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the 'Tour du Lac Sainte-Croix' (34%) and also intersects with parts of 'Les barrages du Verdon' (28%), 'La Romaine' (20%), and 'Lacs du Verdon' (14%). You might also briefly encounter segments of 'Les gorges du Verdon' (10%) and 'TransVerdon' (8%).
Yes, the charming villages situated around the lake, such as Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Bauduen, and Les Salles-sur-Verdon, offer various cafes, restaurants, and shops where you can refuel and enjoy local Provençal cuisine. It's a good idea to plan your stops, especially during off-peak seasons, as some establishments might have limited hours.
For this touring bicycle trip, essential items include a well-maintained bicycle, helmet, appropriate cycling attire, and plenty of water, especially during warmer months. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are highly recommended due to the open terrain. Don't forget a basic repair kit, a first-aid kit, and snacks. A camera is a must to capture the stunning scenery!
Beautiful and challenging circular tour. Wonderful weather, fantastic views, nice restaurants along the way.
very beautiful walk along the lake, very beautiful landscapes. too bad the shops were all closed during this season (All Saints holidays).
The picture showing the dirt/ gravel track is actually my warning. I created the route, but only realised the tarred road ran out at a-farmhouse. Then, I had,at first, rough stone/ gravel path on the level . MTB type terrain Then theres about 500m of loose large stoned gravel, on a very steep decline You would need to walk over this - even MTB heads! But worth it in the end as the alternative was 10k detour!.
Always nice the round around the Lac de St-Croix. In places you think you are in the Caribbean. The loop is easy to ride on a normal bike, but there are some tough climbs in Moustiers-Saintes-Marie and Les Croix du Verdon. Today I borrowed an e-bike for the first time. It was fun, but I hope that the shortness of breath caused by Covid will disappear soon and I can kick like normal again... I can recommend #ebikemoustiers.fr for those who don't own an e-bike😉
