Hiking

Embark on a challenging yet rewarding hike through the dramatic glacial landscape of Cwm Idwal and up Y Garn, starting from Ogwen Cottage. This moderate to hard loop covers 4.6 miles (7.3 km) with a significant elevation gain of 1985 feet (605 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 6 minutes to complete. You will navigate varied terrain, from stone-surfaced paths around tranquil Llyn Idwal to rough, steep ground and scrambling sections through the iconic Devil's Kitchen, all while surrounded by high crags and breathtaking panoramic views across Snowdonia from Y Garn's summit.

Before you set out, be prepared for demanding conditions; good walking boots are essential due to uneven and potentially slippery surfaces, especially after rain. The trail is exposed, so you should be ready for changing weather and have some mountain experience. The ascent to Y Garn, particularly via Devil's Kitchen, requires sure-footedness and a good level of fitness, as it involves sustained steep climbs and descents. Always check the weather forecast before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

This area holds immense geological and ecological significance, with Cwm Idwal being Wales' first designated National Nature Reserve. It showcases spectacular glacial landforms and unique geology, which even Charles Darwin studied in 1842. The route is also home to rare Arctic and alpine plants, adding to its biodiversity. Y Garn, the tenth highest mountain in Wales, offers some of the best views in Snowdonia and is often a quieter alternative to other popular peaks, providing a memorable connection to the region's natural history and beauty.

Ogwen Visitor Centre and Snack Bar

Highlight • Parking

The visitor centre is located on the A5, approximately 5 miles south of Bethesda and approximately 4 miles west of Capel Curig, on the western side of Llyn Ogwen.
There are a number of facilities including toilets, disabled toilets, an information room, public wifi and a small kiosk selling hot and cold snacks.
From the visitor centre you can start a range of walks and climbs in the area. The most popular is the walk to Wales' first ever national nature reserve, the beautiful Cwm Idwal, a glacial lake with a mountainous backdrop.

Cwm Idwal

Highlight • Lake

A beautiful lake with stunning views to Tryfan and Pen Yr Ole Wen. There is a circular walk from the visitors centre which takes you around the lake or you can use this as a starting point for the mountains above.

Devil's Kitchen (Twll Du)

Highlight • Gorge

After the rest stop at Llyn Y Cwn we descend and pass the Devil's Kitchen (Twll Du) again. The descent is as strenuous as the climb. The path, as far as can be seen, is quite steep in places. Then it becomes a matter of paying attention, scrambling and searching for the next section of the path. This is not such an easy part of the route. You have to use your hands and feet to conquer the steepest parts.

Y Garn Summit

Highlight • Summit

Y Garn of the Glyderau is a mountain of two halves. On one side it drops in continuous green slopes to the pass of Llanberis. On its other it’s a scooped cluster of cliffs, ridges and buttresses, including the scrambling showpiece of Castell y Geifr, all the way to Llyn Idwal in Snowdonia’s most beautiful cwm.

Trail Reviews

Gideon
October 8, 2024, Cwm Idwal and Y Garn loop anticlockwise

I wasn't quite ready for this! Everything aches and when I get up I make a sound like an old teddy bear. But the views were stunning. New regime required: more exercise, less wine.

A really beautiful path along the Idwal and going up the Y Garn. It's certainly difficult with high winds. So be sure before hiking. It's really great summiting the Mountain and then descending through the Devil's Kitchen . The views are just amazing. Not a lot of traffic through the paths in the month of May. But a very popular path with the hikers. I got this hike from the https://www.walkingenglishman.com/snowdonia.htm

Lovely hike up to Y Garn... I've done this route before but did it in the opposite direction 🙃 we finished the hike and I was totally spent... (realised it was because I was getting ill 🤒) We were 10 mins from the car park and suddenly someone (not me) realised they had lost their car key 😅 so we had to start looking for it and it got dark... he had to run back up to the top of the mountain in the dark and by some stroke of luck just before the summit found it on a rock! By this point I was just about to get 16 buses across North Wales to get my car lol no way I could have run back up the mountain 🤧 He did say "thank god I have just started using komoot so I could retrace my exact steps for the key!" 💚 Top tip... never leave your key in your open pocket
