Cycling

Prepare for a difficult touring bicycle ride on the Tour of Alto Garda for the Limarò Canyon and the Sarca Valley, covering 39.5 miles (63.6 km) with a significant climb of 3021 feet (921 metres). This ring tour typically takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete. You will experience diverse terrain, from the unique green-turquoise waters of Lago di Tenno to panoramic mountain views and lush forests. The route includes a demanding uphill section to Lago di Tenno and over the Ballino Pass, followed by descents that may include gravel paths.

While the route often starts from Riva del Garda, it is a ring tour, so you can begin at various points. Much of the tour utilizes dedicated cycle paths, especially through the impressive Limarò Gorge and along the Sarca Valley. Be aware that some segments, particularly on the descent from Passo Ballino, might be unpaved or gravel, even though many surfaces are paved. The Sarca Valley cycle path is generally flat and easy, offering a more relaxed segment of the journey.

This tour is notable for its striking contrast between the Mediterranean-like shores of Lake Garda and more alpine environments. The Limarò Gorge is a standout feature, with a cycle path offering spectacular views of the canyon carved by the Sarca River, often described as one of Italy's most beautiful. The Sarca Valley itself is characterized by orchards, vineyards, and picturesque towns like Arco, providing a beautiful path along the river. This challenging yet rewarding route offers diverse topography and dramatic views.

View of Lake Tenno

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bathing lake at 428 meters above sea level with a bright turquoise color, immersed in a crazy setting. The lake is a turquoise diamond set in the green of the woods. The lake was generated following a landslide: its tributaries, the Rio Secco river and the Laurino torrent found a barrier and therefore the lake of Tenno that we know today was formed.

Final climb of the 2007 Giro d'Italia, the Ballino pass has no slopes that are impossible on any side, but the glimpses of the surrounding mountains and the asphalt in excellent condition will allow you to fully enjoy it.

June 27, 2025, Tag 8.-Tour des Alto Garda für die Limarò-Schlucht und das Sarca-Tal

After a very quiet night, we drove to Torbole this morning; for a Friday morning, the beach was already quite lively. We'd hate to know what Saturday/Sunday would be like. We took a few pictures and continued on to Riva del Garda. This is where our circular tour into the hinterland began. It took us up numerous switchbacks and uphill meters to Lake Tenno. Further up to the Passo del Ballino 750m above sea level. Then we slowly descended on forest and field paths through a nature reserve, mostly anyway. On our way, we found a quaint inn in Poia just in time for lunch. A cold drink, ravioli, and spinach gnocchi were delicious. Further downhill, we crossed the Limaro Gorge; the views were outstanding and mostly in the shade. We were only able to photograph a small section, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get back to the hotel. In the valley, the cycle path led us into the vineyards, along the Flume River. Back to Torbole, a quick shopping trip, then to the hotel and a dip in the pool. That was our rest day. 😂Günther had planned a little circular tour,👌 we'd easily do those few kilometers,💪he said.⛰️⛰️😇

Driven and recommended by many .... we also really liked the tour. We not only stayed on the road, but also drove on forest paths. Expanding the old closed road into a cycle path was a great idea. Have rarely driven such a beautiful route! Caution on the 2nd picture (km7) was a mega climb. Maybe better bypass it!!!!

A great round trip with lots of variety in a breathtaking landscape! From Riva, the road winds up to Lake Tenno over the Ballino Pass, then a beautiful path through forest and valleys with lots of corn and small villages, always with a great mountain panorama! The Limaro Gorge is impressive and the cycle path runs above it! Out of the gorge, the path winds downhill again along the road. The road is well-used with lots of racing cyclists and sometimes cars, but it is easy to cycle because there is a lane for cyclists. Through the beautiful Sarca Valley with an equally wonderful cycle path to Arco! There is a lot to discover there. But we missed it😄But a small, pretty church caught my eye! I had to make a little detour.

Leaving Riva, the climb began straight away. The winding roads on asphalt took us up to Lago di Tenno. We didn't walk to the lake, however, but drove to the town of Ville de Monte and looked at the church from the 500th century. From there, a drivable hiking trail continues up on gravel. First, you come to a wonderful vantage point with a view of Lago di Tenno. The green water with the mountain panorama is unique. Further up, you come back to the road that leads to Pasdo del Ballino. Shortly after reaching the pass, turn left. From there, you cycle downhill on partly gravel paths and there are always great views of partly snow-covered peaks. Further down, you take the cycle path through the Sarca Gorge. We think it's a must. After the Sarca Gorge, you cycle along the Sarca towards Arco and then on to Torbole. From here, follow the cycle path to Riva. Our conclusion: What a great tour: 67 km, 1090 hm, great cycle paths that are also partly challenging.

Our last tour on Lake Garda took us inland – initially a fairly long uphill climb to Lago di Tenno. The journey there requires a bit of sweat, which was certainly due in part to today's high temperatures. The lake itself impresses with its fantastic color. While the path runs along the road above and not directly along the water, that hardly matters, as our actual destination was something else anyway: the spectacular Sarca Gorge. The gorge once again exceeded all our expectations. Photos can't convey its true extent. You can't get all the way down into the gorge, but even the view from above gives you an idea of how deep it really is. A large part of the route runs on a dedicated bike path – the rocks rise up to the right, while the left slopes steeply downhill. At the end of the gorge, it's worth taking one last look back – an impressive panorama that once again vividly demonstrates the magnitude of this gorge. Afterwards, we continued our relaxed and moderate descent on a beautiful bike path along the Sarca River back to Riva del Garda. It was a fantastically beautiful tour through breathtaking scenery – and we were once again speechless in the face of this magnificent nature!

A trip, you could say a farewell one. I was hiking in the mountains. 😎 Shocking. My watch died, probably from the excitement 😎🤣. The views were oh-so-awesome. 🌿🌿🌿 It was so bad, words fail me.

The title does not refer to a possible "New Bike Day" but to the Sarca Gorge, which is also known as the Canyon del Limarò. There is a bike path that is about 4.3 kilometers long and is said to be absolutely breathtaking. At least that's what a number of YouTubers say We leave out the journey. Also the Toblino Castle, which is intended for the tour to Ranzo. It is identical to the tour two days ago. We start the climb a little above Sarche. We have to share the first few corners with the cars. But it's nothing dramatic. Almost two kilometers and around 90 meters in altitude. Then it's off to the cycle path which leads above the gorge. And what can we say, the YouTubers are absolutely right, the route and the views are absolutely amazing. Because of all the astonishment and taking photos, we can hardly make any progress. But see for yourself. Well, at some point the path comes to an end and we find ourselves back on the road. We drive uphill via Ponte Arche and Fiavé. We later find out that this is the Passo del Ballino. We just took it with us. The pass height is 764 above sea level. Almost 700 meters of descent, how cool is that. The route goes down past Lago di Tenno almost without exception. Then we are in Riva in no time, wind our way through the weekend hustle and bustle and reach Camping Maroadi. Enough for today too. But a really cool tour.

Very nice bike ride. Did not start at the lake itself, because it was quite busy. I would like to do the skywalk, but for that you have to go through a fairly dark, busy tunnel. You can cycle through it, but you must be well lit. We didn't risk it... unfortunately
