We parked in the National Trust car park... here we had delicious cake with tea or coffee after our tour.
But first we went on our tour through the mine area. Great area and spectacular views as far as Cape Cornwall (and Lands End).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Botallack Mine loop suitable for beginners or families with children?

The Botallack Mine loop is generally considered easy, making it suitable for beginners and families. However, some sections feature rugged, uneven terrain, rocky paths, and occasional steep descents or steps. While the main loop is manageable, always stay on marked paths due to unguarded mine shafts. Shorter, easier walks around the area can take as little as 30-40 minutes.

How long does it typically take to hike this loop?

The Komoot route for the Botallack Mine loop is approximately 4.2 kilometers (2.6 miles) long and typically takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete. This duration is for active hiking time and does not include stops for sightseeing or photography.

What is the terrain like on the Botallack Mine loop?

The terrain is rugged and uneven, featuring narrow and informal coastal paths. You can expect rocky sections, especially along the cliffs, and paths that may be wet. There are some steep descents, steps, and stiles. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended due to the uneven ground and potential for slippery surfaces.

What historical sites and natural features can I see along the Botallack Mine loop?

This loop offers a rich blend of history and stunning natural beauty. You'll encounter significant historical sites such as the iconic Crowns Engine Houses, dramatically perched on the cliffs, and the Botallack Mines themselves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other mining remnants include the West Wheal Owles Pumping House and Wheal Edwards Beam Engine House. Natural highlights include panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, often extending to the Isles of Scilly on clear days, and a View of Cape Cornwall. Keep an eye out for seabirds like fulmars and kittiwakes, and possibly seals.

Where can I park for the Botallack Mine loop of the Tin Coast trail?

Is the Botallack Mine loop dog-friendly?

Yes, the Botallack Mine loop is generally dog-friendly. However, due to the presence of livestock, wildlife, and unguarded mine shafts, it's essential to keep dogs on a lead, especially near cliff edges and historical structures. Always clean up after your pet.

What is the best time of year to hike the Botallack Mine loop?

The best time to hike is typically during the spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October). During these periods, the weather is often milder, and the trails are less crowded than in peak summer. Spring brings wildflowers to the coastal heathland, while autumn offers dramatic skies. Summer can be pleasant but also busier. Always check the local weather forecast, as the coastal path can be exposed to wind and rain year-round.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the Botallack Mine area?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Botallack Mine loop. The area is part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, and access to the trails and historical exteriors is generally free. What should I wear or bring for a hike on the Botallack Mine loop?

Given the rugged terrain and exposed coastal conditions, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly; waterproof and windproof outer layers are highly recommended. Bring water, snacks, and a fully charged phone. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also important on clear days, as there is little shade.

Is the Botallack Mine loop accessible for wheelchairs or strollers?

Due to the rugged, uneven terrain, steep slopes, and numerous steps and stiles, the full Botallack Mine loop is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. However, some areas immediately around the Count House and visitor center may offer more accessible paths.
