The first Route of this Collection takes you to the spectacular monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. Perched on top of the Rodes mountain range, you will have a privileged view of the Cap de Creus natural park. This is a long route of almost 100 kilometers in which you drive mainly on quiet secondary roads.

You start the Route in Figueres, next to the station. Barely three kilometers after leaving, you come to the first stop: the canonical church of Santa Maria de Vilabertran, in the town that bears the same name. After visiting this Augustinian monastery, one of the best preserved in Catalonia, you continue on your way to another monastery: Sant Quirze de Colera. To do this, you head north, alternating stretches of highway and dirt tracks, gently ascending towards the Sierra d'Albera. After going through towns like Cabanes or Mollet de Peralada, you arrive at Rabós. From here starts a lonely and narrow road that takes you directly to the monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera. Only in the last few meters does the pavement turn to gravel.

After visiting this monastery, which is located in a small and beautiful inland valley, you retrace your path until you reach the road that leads to Rabós. In this way you continue now to Vilamaniscle and Garriguella. Shortly after leaving this town you arrive at the Castell de Quermançó, a spectacular fortification located in a place of great strategic importance between Spain and France.

After passing through Vilajuïga, in a section by road, the ascent to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes begins. It is a nine kilometer climb with an average gradient of 5.5%. The road is wide and in very good condition. Before reaching Sant Pere de Rodes, you pass by the hermitage of Santa Helena de Rodes, surrounded by the remains of the old medieval town of Santa Creu de Rodes, a civil and commercial center closely linked to the monastery.

Pay attention when leaving Santa Creu de Rodes to return to the road: take a paved road that has some steps. Take the opportunity to get off your bike and contemplate from there the imposing silhouette of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and the bay of Port de la Selva, the beginning of the Cap de Creus natural park.

After crossing the Port de la Selva your next destination is Roses. The tour is done by road with excellent views over the bay of Roses. In this town you stop at the Ciutadella de Roses, an enclosure that dates back to the Renaissance but that houses ruins from different eras inside. Among them is the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria de Roses.

Leaving Roses, 20 completely flat kilometers await you to return to Figueres, in which you travel most of the way along a segregated service road parallel to the main road.

Canonica of Santa Maria de Vilabertran

Highlight • Religious Site

Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, the Canonical Church of Santa Maria de Vilabertran is organized around the trapezoidal cloister, around which the monastic rooms and the church were arranged, except for the abbot's residence, which is located outside the canonical core.

In addition to being one of the best preserved examples of medieval canonical architecture in Catalonia, the Canonical Church of Santa Maria de Vilabertran is a good example of the Augustinian movement of ecclesiastical reform. This movement coincides with the decline of the Benedictine monasteries, and was intended to reinforce the ecclesiastical reorganization of the lands reconquered from Islam.

Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera

Highlight • Religious Site

Its history dates back to medieval times. It is believed to have been founded in the 9th or 10th century. During its history, the monastery was an important religious and cultural center in the region.

The monastery has Romanesque architecture and some Gothic parts. The monastery church is an outstanding example of Catalan Romanesque architecture. It presents architectural elements characteristic of that period, such as semicircular arches and decorated columns.

Over the years, the monastery played an important role in the religious life of the region, and housed a community of monks. Today, the monastery has been restored and preserved as a place of historical and religious interest.

The monastery is usually open to the public for sightseeing tours, where visitors can explore its historic architecture and learn more about its religious past.

Quermançó Castle

Highlight • Castle

Ruins of the medieval castle, located on a high hill about two kilometers from the town of Vilajuïga. It is an isolated fortification that underwent many renovations and expansions during the 10th and 15th centuries. At the time, the complex was surrounded by a wall, today in a ruined state.

Currently, part of the old Keep, the outer circular tower, and some later constructions are preserved. The castle of Quermançó is an important example of what early medieval Catalan castles were for defense, capable of resisting the onslaught of any crowd much larger than the few that could fit within its perimeter.

Hermitage of Saint Helena of Rodes

Highlight • Religious Site

The urban structure of Santa Creu de Rodes corresponds to a closed town, that is to say, a town where the rear facades of the houses functioned as walls and where it could only be accessed through the fortified portals.

Its nerve center was the church square, around which the houses are located. Separated by the streets that lead there. These are large buildings (between 70 and 100 m²), with a ground floor, one floor, and roofed with tiles, which often had a patio, vegetable garden or corral.

Santa Creu de Rodes was born and grew in the shadow of the monastery of Sant Pere and was a prosperous place where fairs and markets were held, where hoteliers, tailors, bakers, shoemakers, blacksmiths, tavern keepers or notaries, among others, offered their services to everyone who arrived, especially to the many pilgrims who went to the monastery.
