The Brockenhurst loop is approximately 35.9 km (22.3 miles) long and typically takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete by mountain bike. This duration can vary based on your fitness level and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
This loop is rated as 'moderate' and requires good fitness and some advanced riding skills due to its length and varied terrain. While it features mostly gravel tracks and some well-surfaced roads, there are uphill and downhill sections. Beginners might find it challenging, but there are shorter, less demanding variations in the New Forest.
The terrain is a diverse mix, predominantly consisting of gravel tracks. You'll also ride on some minor, well-surfaced roads. The route takes you through ancient woodlands and expansive open heathlands, offering a classic New Forest experience.
You'll experience stunning natural beauty, riding through beautiful New Forest woodland and open landscapes. Highlights include views of the Lymington River and encounters with the famous free-roaming New Forest ponies and cattle. Keep an eye out for other wildlife typical of the area.
Along the route, you can enjoy several scenic spots. These include the Scenic Road Through New Forest National Park, the beautiful Rhinefield Ornamental Drive, and the picturesque Hatchet Pond. You might also pass by historical sites or areas with great vistas, especially at sunset.
The New Forest is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. Summer can be busy, and winter might bring muddier conditions on some tracks. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.
Brockenhurst is a convenient starting point with various parking options. The Brockenhurst Trailhead is a good access point. As Brockenhurst is well-connected by public transport, including a railway station, you might consider arriving by train to avoid parking altogether.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on public rights of way within the New Forest National Park. However, it's always good practice to check the official New Forest National Park website for any current regulations or advisories regarding cycling and access.
While dogs are generally welcome in the New Forest National Park, they must be kept under close control, especially around free-roaming ponies, cattle, and other wildlife. On shared-use paths, ensure your dog is on a lead to avoid disturbing other users like pedestrians and horse riders.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails. You'll ride along parts of the New Forest Cycle Routes, Hawkhill Inclosure Off Road Cycle Trail, Brockenhurst Station Off Road Cycle Trail, and National Cycle Route 2 South Mundham to Christchurch, among others.
Brockenhurst village offers excellent facilities. You'll find numerous pubs along or near the routes, providing great opportunities to refuel with food and drinks. There are also cafes and bike hire facilities available in Brockenhurst, making it a convenient base for your ride.
Fantastic route and one part of my 2 day MTB Bank Holiday Adventure. This route was pre made and although an amazing ride there were a few areas which depending on your skill and bike used could cause issues. At 11km you come to Bolderford Bridge with the route turning left before crossing the bridge. Don't do this as you will end up carrying your bike over trees, areas in places unrideable and then you get the end to cross the main road there is no gate, it's a style. I recommend crossing the bridge, turning left and heading in the direction of the main road. Stunning views and wild animals everywhere - amazing. Just amend the route as you see fit.
Lots of this route is not visible and super muddy at the moment . Great adventure tho
