Hiking

The Ascent to Monte Godi — Ring tour offers a moderate hiking experience through varied terrain in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. You will traverse dedicated hiking paths, dirt tracks, and even a small section of state road, encountering steep wooded areas and flat historic "stazzo" (shepherd's hut) areas. The loop covers 7.5 miles (12.0 km) with an elevation gain of 1521 feet (464 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 47 minutes to complete. From the 2011-meter summit of Monte Godi, you can enjoy full 360-degree panoramic views of the Abruzzo mountains, including the Valle del Torrente Tasso and an expansive altiplano. High-altitude prairies add to the scenic charm, especially in autumn when the foliage changes color.

The hike typically starts from Passo Godi, where you will find a convenient parking lot near a ski resort. This moderate route requires good physical fitness, and sturdy shoes are recommended for the varied surfaces. Be aware that some sections within wooded areas can be very steep for both ascents and descents. During winter, icy conditions may necessitate the use of crampons, so plan your visit accordingly. Autumn is particularly recommended for this hike, as the changing colors of the foliage enhance the natural beauty of the landscape.

This trail is notable for its rich history and natural environment. You will pass by a commemorative stele at 1780 meters, marking Pope John Paul II's visit, and historic shepherd's huts like Stazzo Ziomas. The route also includes Rifugio Lo Scoiattolo, a local refuge known for traditional dishes. Being within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, you have a good chance of spotting wildlife, including Apennine chamois and herds of deer, adding to the unique experience.

A beautiful and challenging tour because it is very sunny in summer. Probably best done on beautiful autumn days. There are no water points along the way. The tour was undertaken with an 8 year old girl trained to walk.
