Estanque Chico. Meaques Stream

Highlight • Lake

In the Zarzón area, near the Madrid Zoo, the waters of a stream known as Arroyo Meaques have been dammed to create the Estanque Chico.
Here also rises what is known as the Puente de la Culebra, which owes its name to the undulating shape of the construction that recalls said reptile.

and it's enchanting to walk along the wall of Casa de Campo that overlooks Aravaca and Pozuelo because it's like touching history with your hands. What impacts me the most are the loopholes: those small vertical openings in the brick of the historic wall. Seeing them, I can't help but imagine what was experienced there during the Civil War, when the wall became an improvised defense line.

Garabitas Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

One of the classic climbs of the Casa de Campo.
Ascent stretched by asphalt.
Garabitas played a fundamental role in the Battle of Madrid during the Civil War, since it was one of the two points where the national side established artillery batteries to bombard the capital together with the Cerro del Águila.
The Cerro de Garabitas was conquered by General Varela on November 13, 1936 and resisted all republican attacks, including the "Durruti Column", until Franco decided in Leganés to stop attacking Madrid directly.
The hill also serves as inspiration for several legends, such as the one that says that it is the place from which the souls of Madrid depart for heaven before leaving their city. When meeting here, the souls released that "From Madrid to heaven and, in heaven, a little hole to see it".

Bridge of the French

Highlight • Bridge

The Puente de los Franceses (French Bridge) is an imposing historic arched bridge, built of brick and granite, that spans the Manzanares River with five distinctive semicircular arches. It was erected between 1860 and 1862 and owes its name to the French engineers who designed it.

Good Luck Fountain

Highlight • Monument

With its classicist design, wide sheet of water and monumental stone architecture, the fountain resembles an arch of water: a symbolic beginning for one of the most important natural and recreational spaces in the city.

Casa de Campo Park

Highlight • Forest

This urban park is a former royal hunting ground ceded to the people of Madrid in 1931. Today it is one of the main lungs of the city and a refuge for citizens looking for a bit of recreation and sports in the open air in the middle of the city. Cycling and hiking lovers are the most regulars.

Casa de Campo is the largest park in Madrid and is the habitat of many species of birds, as well as foxes, squirrels and wild boars.
