The hardest mountain in the southern Black Forest - that's what cyclists from southern Baden call it. Rightly so, because Waldkirch's local mountain is one of the highest points in the southern Black Forest. On a winding route you conquer a stately 12 kilometers with an average gradient of 8%.
You start at one of the car parks at the Schlossbergbahn and follow the railway line and cycle paths to Waldkirch. You should be well warmed up there, because the climb knows no mercy. The crisp, steep road goes uphill via serpentines and conveys an almost alpine flair. The view at the top of the pass into the Elztal, the Rhine plain and the Vosges - with good visibility even as far as the Alps - is grandiose and rewards you for the grains left behind. In the Kandel restaurant you can treat yourself to an espresso and ice cream or cake before departure.
Then you whiz down into the Glottertal to St. Peter. Maybe you want to stretch your legs? The large monastery church is worth a look. You cycle back towards Freiburg via the Eschbachtal and the Dreisamtal. You should plan a break in the Bisok, a fixture for cyclists. With ice cream & espresso? you deserve it.

This route was planned by komoot.
Kandelstraße is closed from Altenbach. But you can go by bike.
Hooray, the Waldkirch-Kandel route is open again. Another section has been well restored, in the lower area slope stabilization measures as if you were in the Alps - no savings were made! The upper half is still bumpy as always - hardly disturbing on the ascent, but until the whole route is also suitable for the descent again, you will have to wait until at least 2024.
Kandelstrasse is open again, yay – according to the press since August 11th. https://www.badische-zeitung.de/die-kandelstrasse-von-waldkirch-aus-ist-ab-freitag-wieder-offen--279091231.html Best wishes and thanks to @Daniel for taking me through the Eschbach Valley! Impressive curves that I wouldn't have thought of as a more leisurely (not to say "timid" downhill skier)...
Today a little gray on the Kandelsattel - but almost no traffic when cranking up. From Monday, September 13th Kandelstraße from Waldkirch is completely closed until the end of October, as the next section of the route is due to be renovated. So if you want to ride the 900 meters of altitude this year in halfway warm weather, you should do it this weekend.
It was really nice. In between, the sun even came out and I imagined the announced strong wind to be worse. But the best thing: Up to just before the "Sowieso" hut, there is now wonderfully rolling asphalt. dreamy! At the top then a view of the Alps and finally there was the promised breeze at only 4 degrees. The small ascent to St. Peter to warm up came in handy. Oh yeah, we're total wimps by the way. A couple passed me chatting easily in a monkey tooth.... in short short 🥶
The spring air was just too tempting - and at least 2/3 of the tour was still in daylight. It was nice and quiet this evening at the Kandel, it was downright lonely at the top of the pass.
Very tolerable conditions today for the first Kandel descent in 2022. Although tolerable does not necessarily have to mean pleasant at this time of year - the minus 2 degrees at the top of the pass were rather rough thanks to the very brisk wind🥶. On the other hand, the car traffic was very limited today, so not so many went skiing and sledding.
From next Monday, Kandelstrasse will also be completely closed: https://www.stadt-waldkirch.de/start/aktuelle+meldungen/kandelsperrung.html If things go badly, it won't be open again until summer '25 - if it goes well, it will snow :/
