The terrain is varied and can be challenging. You'll encounter steep uphill climbs, rocky paths, and large boulders. Some sections, particularly between Lac Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys, feature metal ladders. The descent can be steep but often has carved steps and logs. Early in the summer, snowfields might still be present, making some parts slippery.
A popular starting point for a moderate version of the loop is the Flégère gondola. Other routes can begin from Col des Montets or Argentière/Trélechamp, which tend to be steeper. Using cable cars or chairlifts, like the Flégère gondola or L'Index chairlift, can significantly reduce the elevation gain on foot, making the trail more accessible.
The best time to hike the Lac Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys Loop is typically from July through mid-September. This period generally offers the most favorable conditions, as snowfields from the previous winter have usually melted, and the weather is more stable. Hiking outside of this window, especially in early summer, may involve traversing snow.
No, dogs are generally not allowed on this route. The trail is located within the Réserve Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges, a protected nature reserve, which has specific regulations regarding pets to protect local wildlife and the pristine alpine environment.
There are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking the Lac Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys Loop within the Réserve Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges. However, it is a protected area, so visitors must adhere to regulations such as staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and respecting prohibitions on dogs and drone use.
The loop offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Mont Blanc massif. Key highlights include the vibrant blue waters of Lac Blanc, often reflecting the snowy peaks, and the equally stunning Lacs des Chéserys. You'll also pass by Lac de la Flégère and enjoy a View of the Tour Glacier. Keep an eye out for wildlife like ibexes.
Yes, the route intersects with several other notable paths. Significant portions of the loop overlap with the Tour du Mont Blanc - Itinéraire principal and sections of the TMB CCW Alt Stage 10.2 La Tête aux Vents – Lac Blanc – Refuge La Flégère. You'll also find smaller sections that are part of the Grand Balcon Sud and the Sentier Botanique.
Yes, there is a mountain hut, the Lac Blanc Refuge, located near Lac Blanc. It offers accommodation and food, making it a great base for those wishing to experience sunrise or sunset views over Mont Blanc. Bivouacking is also an option near Lacs des Chéserys, but be sure to check local regulations.
The Lac Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys Loop is very popular, especially during peak season. To avoid crowds and enjoy a more tranquil experience, it's highly recommended to start your hike early in the morning. Alternatively, consider staying overnight at the Lac Blanc Refuge or bivouacking near Lacs des Chéserys to enjoy the views before or after the main crowds arrive.
Yes, there are sections with metal ladders, notably between Lac Blanc and Lacs des Chéserys, often referred to as The Chésérys ladders. While generally not overly exposed, hikers with a fear of heights or those carrying large packs might find these parts challenging. Some routes, particularly from Argentière or Trélechamp, also include technical sections with climbing steel ladders.
The overall loop is generally rated as difficult, requiring good fitness, sure-footedness, and some alpine experience. It is not typically recommended for beginners or very young children due to steep sections, rocky terrain, and ladders. However, using cable cars like the Flégère gondola can significantly reduce the difficulty and make shorter, more moderate sections of the trail accessible to families with older, experienced children.
As there has been significantly more snow in the Alps this season, we decided to start our hiking adventures on the southern side of the mountains. Nevertheless, also this hike provided us with plenty of snowy sections. All of them were quite easy going and some sections even allowed us to slide down through the snow which was plenty of fun 🙌🏻😃Throughout the entire hike we were treated to the most stunning views on the Mont Blanc and surrounding mountain peaks. The Lac Blanc was still largely frozen over, but nonetheless beautiful!! Along the route, once again we were given the opportunity of some close encounters with Ibex 🐐😃 Stunning creatures!!
On this hike I enjoyed myself there were ibexes, when I reached the top there was a lot of snow so follow the route of your GPS carefully and towards the end there is a series of several ladders and platforms if you are prone to vertigo be careful and on this hike you need to be in good physical condition I struggled the last three to four kilometers be careful. So put on good shoes and have a good hike, I give it a 5+++ out of 5.
A very popular hike, even mid September, lots of people. In high season, come very early
This is a great hike to spot wildlife such as Chamois and even Golden Eagle .And the views of the Mont Blanc massive are spectacular
