This route was planned by komoot.
The trail starts from Baños de Panticosa, specifically near the Casa de Piedra refuge. There is ample parking available at Baños de Panticosa, making it an easy access point for your hike.
The terrain is varied and challenging. The initial ascent is often steep, following the Caldarés River through pine forests and past granite walls and waterfalls. You'll encounter sections with potentially slippery rocks, where cables and handrails are installed for assistance. As you gain elevation, the landscape transitions to a high-mountain environment with rocky areas and meadows, characteristic of the Pyrenees.
This trail offers stunning high-mountain scenery. Key highlights include the Barranco de Caldarés with its numerous cascades, such as the impressive Cascada del Fraile. You'll pass by the Lake Bachimaña and eventually reach the crystalline waters of the Lower Blue Ibón and Upper Blue Lake, nestled among imposing peaks. From the Ibones Azules, you'll have impressive views of peaks like the Picos del Infierno and Pico de Piedrafita.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in the Aragonese Pyrenees, including this route. However, it is crucial to keep your dog on a leash at all times to protect local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always pack out any waste.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring through early autumn (June to October). During these months, the weather is generally more favorable, and the trail is free of snow. Hiking in winter requires specialized equipment like crampons and a piolet, and is only recommended for experienced mountaineers due to challenging conditions.
Yes, the Refugio de los Ibones de Bachimaña is conveniently located near Lake Bachimaña. It serves as an excellent resting point where you can take a break, enjoy the views, and even find accommodation, drinks, and food.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this particular trail. While the area is part of the Ordesa-Viñamala Biosphere Reserve, general access to this trail is free. Always respect local regulations and leave no trace.
Yes, this route is part of the well-known GR-11 Senda Pirenaica long-distance footpath. It also intersects with sections of the Ruta circular de los Infiernos-Ibones Azules-Bachimañaa, Senda Pirenaica - E27, and Variante Bachimaña - Ibon de Brazatos, offering possibilities for extended or alternative hikes.
Given the trail's moderate to high difficulty and significant elevation gain, you should bring plenty of water, snacks, appropriate hiking boots, and layered clothing suitable for changing mountain weather. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also essential. A map or GPS device is recommended, as is a first-aid kit.
The described route to the Blue Lakes and Bachimaña from Baños de Panticosa is primarily an out-and-back trail. You will return along the same path you ascended, offering different perspectives on the stunning scenery.
This trail is considered moderate to high difficulty. It requires good physical condition due to the significant elevation gain and some steep sections. While not overly technical, the demanding ascent and varied terrain make it a challenging but rewarding experience.
We begin the route in the first parking lot of the Baños de Panticosa. The route is well signposted, in our case it was crowded with people and is demanding because of the slope and in our case also because of the heat. You pass through the Bachimaña refuge, and from there you can climb the blue Ibones. We only got to the first one.
