The trail typically starts from the village of Foppolo. You can find parking options in Foppolo, which serves as the main access point for this loop hike.
This hike is rated as moderate, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. Some sections are particularly rocky, especially on descents. It corresponds to approximately SAC 2-3 difficulty, meaning it can be considered medium to demanding in parts.
This is a scenic panoramic loop trail, allowing you to experience diverse landscapes without retracing your steps.
The path is predominantly natural mountain hiking terrain, making up about 7.71 km of the route. You will also encounter gravel sections (2.02 km) and very short paved stretches. Be prepared for some steeper, rocky parts, particularly on descents.
The trail offers several beautiful highlights, including the stunning Lago Moro, the picturesque Montebello Lakes, and the tranquil Lake of the Trouts. You'll also pass the Pass of the Cross, Valcervia Pass, and the Salomon Terrace (Rifugio Montebello), which offers panoramic views.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to October). During these months, the weather is generally favorable, and the alpine lakes are fully accessible. Autumn offers beautiful colors, while summer provides warmer conditions for enjoying the high-altitude scenery.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on this trail. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife, and to follow local regulations for responsible pet ownership in natural parks.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail. It is located within the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche, which does not typically charge an entrance fee for hiking its trails.
Yes, the route intersects with several other official trails. Sections of this hike follow parts of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa D18S, Sentiero dei Laghi Alto - Tappa 6, and Sentiero delle Orobie Occidentali - Tappa 5 and Tappa 4.
Yes, the Salomon Terrace (Rifugio Montebello) is located along the route, offering a convenient and scenic spot for a break, refreshments, or a meal. It's a great place to enjoy panoramic views.
This trail is notable for being a picturesque loop that visits four distinct alpine lakes in a single hike: Lago Moro, Laghetti di Montebello, Lago delle Foppe, and Lago delle Trote. It's described as a 'journey into alpine beauty' providing postcard-worthy views and tranquility, making it ideal for a day trip away from urban hustle. There's also a chance to spot chamois.
June 25. Hot day but at 2400 meters the breeze helps you. Starting from a parking lot in Foppolo and immediately a challenging climb along the ski lifts under a scorching sun. Once you reach Monteo you tackle another loop with a view of the lakes. A slightly challenging point for the rest only physical effort. The mountain landscapes are beautiful. 8
Departure from Foppolo Climb Corno Stella 🌟 return to the trout lake and return to Foppolo beautiful day
The path starts from Foppolo going up a dirt road. The first part is quite depressing, as it crosses the havoc created by the Foppolo ski slopes (you can avoid it by taking the chairlift). From the Salomon hut the story changes and everything is much more pleasant. The last part of the climb to Corno Stella, rather steep especially in the first part after Lake Moro, has some slightly exposed sections but nothing risky if you are used to mountain excursions. The view from the summit is spectacular.
