Always check for current trail closures, particularly after heavy rain, as conditions can become extremely dangerous.
Today we went to the Great Falls on the Potomac River 🌊. In Great Falls, the Potomac River gains speed and power as it plunges over a series of steep, jagged rocks 🪨 and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge 🏞. The Patowmack Canal offers a glimpse into the early history of this country. Great Falls Park offers many opportunities to explore history and nature, all in a beautiful 800-acre park 🌲🌳🌿, just 15 miles from Washington. For the way back we chose the Billy Goat Trail, a challenging but extremely rewarding trail 🫶🏼🥰. A bit of a challenge in 30 degree heat 🥵. We climbed and scrambled over sloping rocks and boulders 🪨 and enjoyed the fantastic view 👀😍 of the foaming Potomac winding through the Mather Gorge. What a beautiful place 🫶🏼
A fun rocky trail to scramble over! Recomend good shoes and decent athlecisim.
Who knew you could do such a cool hike super close to Washington DC? One moment you are on an 8-lane highway and 10 minutes later you are in this impressive landscape! The hike isn't long, but you should plan for a while because it's quite a scramble. Up and down over rocks, sometimes small, sometimes quite high. Clear recommendation to anyone who happens to be in the area 👌
