This route was planned by komoot.
Spring and autumn are generally the best seasons for cycling around Lake Como. The climate is mild, and there are fewer tourists compared to the peak summer months. While summer offers warm weather, roads can be busier, especially on weekends.
The route primarily features mostly paved surfaces, making it suitable for touring bicycles. While there are some rolling hills and short climbs, it's designed to be manageable. Be aware that some main roads around Lake Como have tunnels; while some can be avoided, those near Bellano, Varenna, and a longer one near Lecco might be unavoidable. It's recommended to use front and rear lights when passing through tunnels for safety.
This route is classified as a 'moderate bike ride' requiring 'good fitness'. While it's accessible to all skill levels, it does involve some elevation changes. For those who prefer an easier ride or are cycling with family members who might find it challenging, e-bikes are a popular option and can be rented in the area. The ferry integration also allows for flexibility to shorten the ride if needed.
The tour starts and ends in Menaggio. You can find parking in Menaggio, which is well-connected and a central point for the ferry system. Specific parking areas can be found near the lakeside promenade or within the town. Public transport, such as buses, also serves Menaggio, connecting it to other towns around Lake Como.
This route offers breathtaking views of Lake Como and connects three iconic towns: Menaggio, Varenna, and Bellagio. You'll pass by highlights such as Villa Carlotta, the Menaggio Lakeside Promenade and Piazza, and the Bellagio Lakeside Promenade. Other points of interest include Castello Rezzonico and Andreani Castle, Corenno Plinio, offering rich historical and scenic experiences.
A key feature of this round trip is the strategic use of the Navigazione Laghi ferry system, which connects Menaggio, Varenna, and Bellagio. This allows you to cross the lake efficiently, shorten your ride, and enjoy unique views from the water. Bikes can be transported on the car ferries, making it convenient for cyclists to complete the loop.
While this route is in the broader Alto Lario region, which includes the Riserva Naturale Pian di Spagna e Lago di Mezzola, the main cycling path itself does not typically require special permits or entrance fees for general passage. However, always respect local signage regarding protected areas, stay on marked paths, and be mindful of wildlife. For specific regulations within the reserve, it's best to check official park information if you plan to deviate from the main route into deeper parts of the reserve.
While dogs are generally allowed in many public areas around Lake Como, specific rules for cycling routes can vary. On the ferry, dogs are usually permitted but may require a leash and muzzle, and a small fee might apply. When cycling, ensure your dog is well-behaved and on a leash if walking alongside, or safely secured in a bike trailer. Always clean up after your pet.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other established paths. Notably, it covers significant portions of the Antica Via Regina and the PCIR 03 Adda. You'll also find it intersects with parts of the Lungolago and the Sentiero Valtellina, offering a diverse cycling experience that incorporates elements of these broader networks.
Yes, bike rental shops are available in towns like Menaggio, Varenna, and Bellagio. They offer a range of bicycles, including e-bikes, which are a popular choice for tackling the varied terrain around Lake Como. Renting an e-bike can make the moderate difficulty of this route more accessible for all fitness levels.
Given the moderate difficulty and potential for tunnels, it's advisable to pack essentials such as a helmet, water bottles, snacks, and a basic repair kit. Front and rear lights are highly recommended for tunnels. Depending on the season, layers of clothing are useful, and a lightweight rain jacket is always a good idea. Don't forget your camera for the stunning views!
Beautiful ride on roads with little traffic and mostly along the lake shore, with long stretches of cycle path, crossing picturesque villages and villages, possibility of stopping for a lunch stop or a swim in one of the various public beach points with access to the lake. It deserves a full day to enjoy the stops
From Mandello to Colico really beautiful: mostly cycle path with varied surfaces, secondary roads, little busy road. Lecco side, from Colico to Varenna practically the old SS36, a few variations without cars looming 🙁... unfortunately, on this side, NOTHING has been done for bikes... on the entirely or almost private lake, and the mountain on the other part that limits the territory. The km includes the 5 of the Varenna-Menaggio ferry☝️
From Menaggio, you first take the ferry to Varenna and from there around the northern Lake Como back to Menaggio. At the beginning, the route goes through a few tunnels. Later - on the west bank - the cycle path leads along the old road around the rocks, while cars and trucks also drive through tunnels here. Especially in the north-western area, the route runs away from the road directly along the bank, but there are lots of pedestrians.
Trekking bike tour around the northern arm of Lake Como with the boat passage Varenna - Menaggio. Start in Colico Piona, along the lake shore via Derivo (the large promontory extended-pista cyclyable!), Bellano to Varenna. Converted by ferry to Menaggio (5.60 euros with bike per person) and via Musso, Dongo (after the river to the lake - drove to the supermarket here (detour)), Gravedona, Domaso, Gera Lario back to Colico. We still wanted to visit the Forte de Fuentes, but had no luck at 5 p.m. (it had just closed). The tour has sections on the main road again and again, on the Menaggio lake side it has 90% cycle paths. For weekdays it wasn't so bad.
A very beautiful and easy tour. There were high waves on the lake, at times even reaching over the bike path, which was very refreshing.
Except for a few small sections, the route leads away from busy roads. You need a little patience to cross the ferry (I still need to work on that). There are many good opportunities to stop for a break. After the torrential rain last night and heavy thunderstorms, this round trip was very relaxing. Highly recommended! 🍷🍷
Great tour. Less developed east side means more street. Overall, in the north and west, a lot of bike paths or driving on the promenade. Hardly any pedestrians at the end of September.
Today we kept the bike flat and circled northern Lake Como. Very nice route, some tunnels cannot be avoided. Switching sides with the ship is right up my alley.
