This trail is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty. It requires good physical fitness and sure-footedness due to varied terrain, including continuous zig-zag ascents, particularly along the 'Senda de Las Columnas', and a section that follows a firebreak to the summit. While mostly accessible paths, you'll encounter natural paths, unpaved sections, and some alpine terrain.
You'll be treated to rewarding panoramic views, especially from the summit of El Relojero Peak (604 meters above sea level), where you can see the Cresta del Gallo and Puerto del Garruchal. Along the way, you might also spot cultural landmarks such as the Sanctuary of La Fuensanta, an abandoned seminary, the Eremitorio de la Ntra. Sra. de la Luz, and the remains of the 11th-century Arab fortress, Castillo de Santa Catalina del Monte (also known as Castillo de La Luz).
While the trail is located within the Parque Regional El Valle y Carrascoy, which generally allows dogs, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure their safety on varied terrain. Please be mindful of other hikers and any specific park regulations regarding pets.
The Murcia region can get very hot in summer. For a more comfortable experience, the best time to hike this trail is typically during the cooler months, from autumn to spring (October to May). This avoids the intense summer heat and allows for more enjoyable conditions, especially given the significant elevation gain.
The starting point of this route is accessible via public transport. While specific parking details for 'La Balsa del Valle' are often sought, the trail's accessibility by public transport offers a convenient alternative. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for routes connecting Murcia to the trailhead area.
The El Relojero trail is located within the Parque Regional El Valle y Carrascoy. Generally, there are no entrance fees or specific permits required for hiking on established trails within this regional park. However, always respect park regulations, especially concerning waste, fire, and wildlife.
Yes, this route shares sections with several other official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Veteranos 92, Transmurciana 01, Camino de Santiago del Azahar, and Camino del Apóstol. Other smaller sections include the Senda de Las Columnas and Mini Ismael o Cazadores, offering a varied experience.
Given its moderate difficulty, significant elevation gain (~605m), and varied terrain including alpine sections, this trail is generally better suited for hikers with good physical fitness and some experience. While alternative paths of varying difficulty exist, it might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners. Sure-footedness is a must.
Given the trail's length and elevation, we recommend bringing plenty of water, snacks, appropriate hiking footwear with good grip, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing as temperatures can vary. A map or GPS device is also advisable, especially if you plan to explore alternative paths. There is considerable tree cover in some areas, offering shade.
While the trail itself is a natural experience, the starting point is accessible from Murcia, and the route passes by cultural landmarks. You'll find amenities like cafes and restaurants in the nearby towns and villages surrounding the Parque Regional El Valle y Carrascoy, making it easy to refuel before or after your hike.
The El Relojero Peak is a significant highlight because it offers the most rewarding panoramic views of the entire hike. From its 604-meter summit, you can enjoy stunning vistas across the landscape, including the Cresta del Gallo and the Puerto del Garruchal, making the ascent well worth the effort.
