View of the Pont d'Espagne waterfalls

Highlight • Waterfall

The Pont d'Espagne, beyond the construction, is an exceptional natural site where waterfalls follow one another. It is the starting point for many hikes and walks which lead to Lac de Gaube and to the Oulettes glacier. Others take you to the Marcadau valley or to the banks of Lake Ilhéou, where you can spend the night in a refuge. From Cauterets, the site which is located in the heart of the Pyrenees national park is accessible by transport (choose the bus rather than your car), by chairlift but also on foot via the GR10.

Lac de l'Embarrat

Highlight • Lake

A long technical and difficult climb but which gives us the reward of seeing this beautiful lake.... But after that we have to climb again and again to see the other lakes before starting the descent and returning to the Pont d'Espagne. A superb hike although long and intense. Be in good shape and sporty to do this recovery.

July 14, 2022, Pont d'Espagne Grande randonnée 21kms

Here is THE hardest hike in the collection (after blue lake and green lake). Count 8h30, 20kms and 1000 meters of elevation to complete the loop ^_^ Long and intense hike... Departing from the Pont d'Espagne, the path is flat for the first 4 kilometers then the climb attacks directly without stopping until the very first lower lake of the embarrat. Perfect landscape in nature, take the opportunity to have a drink and regain your strength because you will need it. A big climb on stones is well felt and the ascent continues again and again for the well being of our legs ;-). You arrive at the upper lake of embarrat. Then a very long climb (again) will take you to the Pourtet lake where you will have a quiet snack break by the lake. that's it, the 1000 meters of elevation are done! Congratulations to you... AFTER eating, you leave to reach Lake Nere which you will circumvent before attacking the descent phase which will be looooong very very looooong. Then you will arrive at the edge of the river where you can rest a little and dip your feet in the water to relax the arch of the foot a little. Finally you continue your descent to the bridge of Spain to admire the waterfalls. A hike to do at least once in your life.

One of the most beautiful tours of the Pyrenees. The lakes mark out this accessible circuit although long. No danger but the assurance of discovering a singular nature, beautiful enough to come back and stop there. The viewpoints on the crest line of the Pyrenees are unique. The Bassia lake is a non-essential supplement or just for fun and the view of the ridges...but all the others are to be discovered.
