Buckland Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Buckland Abbey dates from 1278 when it was built as a Cistercian Abbey.

After the disolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII sold the abbey to Sir Robert Grenville the Elder who converted it to a residential building. Sir Francis Drake later lived here.

Buckland Abbey is now owned by the National Trust and both the property and gardens are open to the public. See their website for further details nationaltrust.org.uk/buckland-abbey

Maristow Weir

Highlight • River

This place is so beautiful and peaceful. The weir is tidal so check the tide times if you plan this route as a crossing; it can be crossed by car at low tide.

If you're not scared of taking your shoes and socks off, it can be tackled at high tide, there is a footpath that submerges a foot or so beneath the surface that can be crossed, this does add a bit of fun to the journey.

The west side of the weir is an off-road track to the top valley leading to the road.

This path can be completed on a road bike, however, I probably wouldn't plan this way again, unless the weather has been particularly dry, as I did have to walk for some of the ascent.

This is a great little highlight to a trip, well worth a look. Perfect for a mountain bike.

The road here into or out of Bere Ferres passes close to the River Tavy and provides lovely views across the water.

Bere Ferres is a small village with a pub for refreshment and despite its size, has a mainline railway station.
