What is the best time of year to hike the West Beach 3-Loop Trail?

The trail offers a unique experience year-round. Many hikers find the sand less challenging in winter when it is more compact. Spring and fall provide pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage or blooming wildflowers. Summer is popular for combining a hike with a swim at the beach afterward. Consider visiting during off-peak times for fewer crowds.

Where can I park, and how do I access the trailhead?

Other official trails that intersect or run concurrently for portions include DLT h - N. Lake to Midwest Rd and various segments of the West Beach Trail.

November 2, 2023, 🇺🇲 Indiana Dunes: West Beach

Instead of Indiana Jones, today it's Indiana Dunes: There are currently 63 national parks in the USA. So far, we've only visited three of them: Shenandoah, the Great Smokies, and Congaree National Park. Visiting them all would still be quite a task. At least we added number four today. At the southern end of Lake Michigan lie the Indiana Dunes, a dune landscape formed by the retreat of the last continental glacier about 14,000 years ago. Several (at least four) dune ridges lie behind the lakeshore, revealing different stages of Lake Michigan's historical shoreline. In the 19th century, the abundant, very fine sand (which is therefore ideal for glassmaking, for example) was mined. That is, until a forward-thinking woman named Alice Mabel Gray, better known by her stage name "Diana of the Dunes," intervened. In various lectures and presentations, Diana described how the metropolis of Chicago and the dunes were like a family, and that destroying the dunes would be sacrilege. Indeed, sand mining was halted, and the dune landscape was largely preserved. The area surrounding the national park is densely populated and developed industrial territory, making it easy to imagine what would have become of the dunes. On our two-hour hike, we combined all three trails of West Beach. The national park encompasses several unconnected sections, so choosing a specific area wasn't straightforward. However, we made a great choice with West Beach. The mix of the dune oak forest in its autumnal colors, the path along Long Lake, and finally the section on the beach itself made for a captivating and memorable experience. The Chicago skyline is 28 miles away and, despite the haze, was captured quite well in photos (thanks to post-processing) – a taste of what awaits us on our last two days, which will take us back to the metropolis.
