This route was planned by komoot.
The trail primarily features a crushed stone or gravel surface. While some sections are relatively flat and easy, others include rolling hills, steep ascents, and challenging descents, particularly in the southern parts. A notable difficult section is a 0.7-mile climb on switchbacks from the Owens Trailhead up to the park headquarters. The trail is generally not considered a 'smooth' ride.
Due to the crushed stone and gravel surface, which can have large gravel in some areas, hybrid or mountain bikes are most appropriate. Road bikes or mountain bikes without suspension are generally not recommended for the trail.
The trail's difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous. Many sections are considered easy to moderate, especially for beginners cycling from Milford Beach to Bushkill Village. However, challenging portions exist, such as steep switchbacks and sections designated as 'hikers-only' where cycling is not permitted and pushing a bike would be extremely difficult.
Cyclists are treated to diverse and picturesque landscapes, including continuous views of the Delaware River, charming streams, expansive open farm fields, and dense forests. You'll also find historical landscapes, traces of former settlements, and views of islands like Poxono Island and Shapanack Island. Waterfalls can be seen along the cliffside in some areas.
There are 16 easily accessible trailheads located between 0.5 and 5 miles apart along the trail. Many of these offer amenities such as parking, restrooms, picnic tables, and boat/canoe launches.
Yes, during summer weekends, a free bus shuttle operates along the trail. This service connects many major trailheads and is capable of transporting bicycles, making one-way trips more convenient.
The trail offers different experiences throughout the year. However, be aware that a 2.5-mile section between Pittman Orchard and Conashaugh trailheads is closed annually from December 15 through July 15 for eagle nesting. Always check for current conditions before you go.
No, there are generally no entrance fees or permits required to access the McDade Recreational Trail or the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area itself. However, specific activities or facilities within the park might have associated fees.
Yes, leashed pets are permitted on most of the trail. However, there may be exceptions at certain beaches and sections during specific seasons, so it's always best to check local signage.
The trail is multi-use, open to hikers, bikers, and cross-country skiers. Cyclists must adhere to a 15 mph speed limit and yield to hikers. Motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited. Additionally, some sections, specifically a 1.5-mile stretch between Pittman Orchard and Conashaugh parking lots and a 1-mile section between Conashaugh and White Pines parking lots, are designated as 'hikers-only' and are not suitable for bikes.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Toms Creek Trail and the Lower Hornbecks Trail.
