Bähnle cycle path – pleasure cycling in the Black Forest

Cycling

A cycle path of this length and with such a gentle gradient is a true rarity in the southern Black Forest. The route offers the perfect blend of relaxed enjoyment of nature and active exercise – an ideal outing for the whole family. The route's distinctive features include wide curves, impressive embankments, and deep cuttings, giving it its unique character.

An architectural highlight of this loop is the Klausenbach Viaduct, an impressive iron under-chord bridge. At the end of the tour in Bonndorf, you can take a detour to the Japanese Garden before reflecting on your ride in one of the cozy cafés.

Klausenbach Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

One of the highlights on the Bähnle cycle path, an approximately 30 kilometer long route from Titisee-Neustadt via Lenzkirch to Bonndorf. In addition to the scenically interesting route, there are also always interesting contemporary witnesses of the disused railway line to see, for example train stations and bridges. The Klausenbach Viaduct, also known as the Löffelschmiede Viaduct, is one of my favorites. It is a very impressive iron lower chord bridge built in 1907.

Japanese Garden Bonndorf

Highlight • Structure

The Japanese Garden in Bonndorf is a true place of power. Here you can immerse yourself in the harmony of the elements: the gentle sound of the water, the vibrant flora, and the tranquility of the pavilion practically invite you to meditate 🔥🌱💦💨. Whether admiring the ponds or discovering the historic boundary stones – the best way to experience this little paradise is to simply stroll through it yourself and let your mind wander.

The relatively flat bicycle or cycle path, on or next to the former route of the Lenzkircher Bähnles, is approx. 27 km long and is ideal for an easy day tour if you go there and back. You can start from Neustadt or from Bonndorf. We parked at Bonndorf Castle, where there are plenty of free parking spaces. You can probably also park in Neustadt or take the train. The former railway line was opened in 1907 and dismantled again after 70 years. Most of the train stations are still standing, but are now used as residential buildings. Only the Lenzkirch train station, which dates back to imperial times, no longer exists. The Kurhaus and a really beautiful spa park are now there, where you can take a break. An attraction is the Klausenbach Viaduct, near Lenzkirch, with a span of approx. 47 m, passable and at the same time the perfect photo opportunity.

The Bähnle cycle path is definitely worth it. Few points of contact with the busy roads. I only recorded the given section. Start and finish were Camping Bankenhof. From there, a quiet bike path leads to Neustadt train station. Shortly before Bonndorf I left the route again to return to the Bankenhof via Schluchsee. Total distance: 62 km.

Today, on the last day of the short vacation, it was a relaxation tour. The entire railway cycle path from Bonndorf to Neustadt was our highlight today. The Klausenbach Viaduct is a piece of history that you have to see once. In my opinion, cycling the cycle path the other way around, Neustadt-Bonndorf, is less intended for families. After Lenzkirch there are some hills that have to be overcome but it takes energy. Despite everything, the entire tour is a beautiful, great bike path.

The Bähnle cycle path would be different; it mostly runs alongside or right next to the old railway embankment. Much of the cycling takes place in the forest, so the view is limited. We've ridden on nicer cycle paths...
