Hiking

You hike through the Kermeter, a heart of the Eifel National Park, alternating through mixed deciduous, spruce, oak and beech forests. Halfway through the tour you cross pastures and meadows and continue along the Heimbach reservoir. Here you can take a detour to Hengebach Castle, which sits high on a rocky spur above Heimbach. At the end of the route you walk along an old Way of the Cross that leads along the Ruppenbach up to the Mariawald Monastery.

Both the Mariawald monastery and its honorary cemetery, as well as the Art Nouveau power plant in Heimbach are also worth a visit. The monastery was the only male branch Trappist monastery in Germany.

You can also shorten the tour. You can find more details under the “Directions” tab.

Tip:
Why not visit the Mariawald Monastery and try the nationally famous pea soup.

Directions:
From the abbey car park, walk uphill towards the Ehrenfriedhof. Follow sign T5. Then it goes through the Herbstbachtal down to the Heimbach reservoir. Attention: If you want to walk the entire tour, do not go downhill along the Herbstbach, but keep heading west and continue running parallel to the slope towards the Art Nouveau power plant and Schwammenauel. If you take the shortcut you will come directly to the reservoir and from there you can walk back to Mariawald Abbey via Heimbach.

Mariawald Soldiers' Cemetery

Highlight • Historical Site

Especially in the present time you should take a moment here and commemorate the fallen from the Second World War. Maybe think of the many dead in Ukraine who are currently having to die there.

The hydropower plant from 1905 draws its water from the Urft Dam and was once the largest storage hydropower plant in Europe. The power plant building is now a listed building and can be viewed on guided tours.

"... The Herbstbach is a right tributary of the Rur in the Heimbach dam near Heimbach, a town in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Herbstbach rises southwest of the Mariawald Abbey. It initially runs around 600 meters in a north-easterly direction, then at the level of the Heimbach war cemetery for around 830 meters in a north-westerly direction, and then runs for around 680 more in a north-easterly direction. There it drains into the dam in the Steinbach settlement area of the city of Heimbach. ... "

Great themed tour no. 5. Round trip from the Mariawald Abbey car park. Quite demanding in places, sturdy shoes are recommended as the paths are sometimes slippery.

On the way on theme trail no. 5 (T5) in the best Rose Monday weather. With considerable temperature fluctuations in places (from almost T-shirt weather to freezer 😂).

Some narrow paths, unsuitable for dog encounters.

Very nice round trip near Heimbach. The climb to Mariawald Monastery is rewarded with impressive views over the Rureifel.

A nice tour on Carnival Sunday. Selected by @Herbert Eckstein.

Day 2 of my post-Covid recovery days😃. 10 km, even with a few steep climbs, are doable again. The day is cloudy, but the atmosphere is calm and peaceful. Feels good!

Today, in bright sunshine, I made my way to Mariawald Abbey again to follow the T5, which I had canceled a few weeks ago due to the weather.

The path up to the military cemetery starts from the parking lot at the monastery, from where you have a great view of the monastery complex and the surrounding area.

Can you cross the Ruhr at points 4 and 7? On the other hand, I find it nicer and much quieter, as the actual route runs on the well-used cycle path and the Rurseebahn also runs there...
