On the roofs of many localities in the area such as Monschau and Kalterherberg as well as in the Schleiden and Roetgen area there is one thing in abundance: slate. Along the desert and Püngelbach streams, the associated rock and slate quarries can be found as witnesses of the times.

Thanks to Komoot and their members, I have finally found this great way. A must for every season!

Wüstebach Stream

Highlight (Segment) • River

Nice, narrow path, mostly shady. In summer you can find wild raspberries along the way. With a little luck you can also see toads sitting in the middle of the path.

Here you can see the efforts of forest development to create near-natural deciduous and mixed forests between the numerous spruce stands.

March 29, 2025,Schieferbrüche und Fledermäuse - Themen-Tour 3 - Nationalpark Eifel
This beautiful tour led along sometimes narrow and rocky paths through the forest, alongside many small streams and rills.
In between, there were always beautiful views. Stark contrasts (healthy coniferous stands and the exact opposite).
The last 5km were unfortunately very asphalt-heavy. If you want to walk the tour, I recommend doing the loop the other way around.
The whole …

Today I hiked the T3 themed trail from the Eifel National Park along the Wüstenbach and Püngelbach streams, starting from the Hirschrott rest area. The route to the Rothe Kreuz rest area is varied, sometimes following wide forest roads, then narrow paths alongside the stream. It would have been even more beautiful with more greenery. Unfortunately, the return route from …

Today I took on the next themed tour in the national park, starting in Erkensruhr from the Finkenauel car park. From there it goes deeper into the idyllic valley of the Erkensruhr in the direction of Hirschrott, the former starting point of this themed tour. Following the Erkensruhr you hike through the wooded valley until you reach the confluence of …

On this warm and sunny day, I wanted to walk one of the official themed trails again, and since the description and reviews promised a lot of good things, this time I chose "Themed Tour 3 - Slate Quarries & Bats":

We did this hike in July. The route is challenging; hiking boots and good fitness are required! But in return, you're rewarded with a beautiful walk with many flowing mountain streams and countless butterflies in a variety of colors.

Today the "T3"... started in Hirschrott at minus 3 degrees and returned at 19 degrees. Mostly asphalted paths up to the Rothe Erde forestry house. Still easy to walk. Since I was already there, I had to stop by the Leykaul. The average speed is of course not correct! I don't know what Komoot is calculating...

Today again Püngel and Wüstebachtal in their colorful autumn leaves.

Off to the Eifel National Park south of the Rursee - this time with the best weather, a great mood and a fantastically beautiful landscape, lots of water and narrow, winding root forest paths 🤗👌🏻

Directions

Starting point: in Hirschrott, at the end of the streets Erkensruhr or Hirschrott. From the "Finkenauel" hiking car park in Erkensruhr, it is about 1.5 kilometers to the starting point of the theme tour (the Finkenauel car park replaces the former Hirschrott car park).
