Hiking

On the outskirts of Villach, the Dobratsch rises to a height of 2,166 meters. The isolated mountain range forms the easternmost foothills of the Gailtal Alps and, due to its special location, offers a particularly beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. The summit area of the Dobratsch is now protected as part of a nature park, which is why you can also observe many rare animals up here. Chamois in particular can be seen again and again.

This panoramic circular tour takes you from the Rosstratte hiking car park up to the summit of the Dobratsch. The outward route via the Jägersteig is rocky in places and is therefore particularly suitable for experienced mountain hikers. The return route, however, runs along a well-developed gravel path. If the Jägersteig is too adventurous for you, you can simply hike to the summit along the gravel path.

From the Rosstratte hiking car park, you first follow the gravel path across wide mountain meadows. At a sharp right turn, the Jägersteig turns left to the Gams- und Gipfelblick lookout point. From the platform you can enjoy a fantastic view before continuing on the Jägersteig. The rocky path is pure enjoyment for experienced mountain hikers and winds its way steeply upwards over mountain meadows and along the edge of the forest.

Once you arrive at the Dobratsch, it is worth taking a detour to the ancient mountain church and the ultra-modern Dobratschhaus in addition to the great panoramic view. The elegant DAV mountain hut was only opened in 2010 and provides hungry hikers with food and drink (open all year round). After a rest, you hike back along the gravel path to the starting point of your hike.

Chamois and summit view

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the viewing platform you have a great view of the wide Carinthian region and on to Slovenia. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of chamois or one or two eagles gliding through the air.

Jägersteig Trail, Dobratsch Nature Park

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful trail under the southern walls of the Dobratsch. Wonderful views of the Gailtaler and Julian Alps all the way to the Triglav, the Mangart and the Karawanken. In the south to Tarvisio.
Unproblematic to go, but a certain surefootedness you should already bring. There are also some exposed spots. Not suitable for small children.

From the summit, you have an incredibly beautiful panoramic view. To the south, the Karawanks with Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia. In addition, the view of the Gailtal valley and the Dreiländereck. Lake Wörthersee with Klagenfurt in the east simply invites you to marvel and enjoy. In good weather, you can see the Hochalmspitze (3,360m).

With the two churches on the summit, Dobratsch is the highest Marian pilgrimage site in Europe.

Very easy for children to manage. However, it is not really suitable for strollers.

Dobratsch Nature Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

Very unique nature experience on the local mountain of the Villach. Most of them used to learn to ski here and now they enjoy hiking in the great outdoors. A special experience in every season!

Rosstratten Stüberl

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Located at the last parking lot on the Villach Alpine Road, it is also a popular destination for tour groups arriving by bus. To ensure that the little ones don't get bored while the adults take a break from hiking, there is a children's adventure playground on the Rosstratte. Here, the children also learn a lot about the nature and animals of the Dobratsch Nature Park. The homemade curd strudel with vanilla sauce is amazing and the staff are super friendly and attentive.

Info: the driveway to the car park cost €20.50 for one vehicle in summer 2023.

A clear round with a moderate incline and altitude difference. The nicer path is definitely the Jägersteig, in the morning it is still shady and cool. Pleasant on hot summer days 😎. The way back is gravel and not really pleasant to go down (the Jägersteig down is not easy either). Fast friendly service in the summit restaurant and dogs …

The climb is not without its challenges; there are 2 to 4 crossings that you have to master carefully. It's better to go slowly and get to the destination. The view is really great; how beautiful must it be without a sea of fog.

Hike Dobratsch via Jägersteig. Some of the first snow is already lying. Some passages on the Jägersteig were washed out.
Good shoes and sure-footedness are required.
It is an advantage to have gloves, a hood or a headband with you.

This morning, clouds lingered on the highest mountain peaks. Since the sun was still shining, we drove up the Villach Alpine Road. With every meter of elevation, the cloud and fog soup became increasingly dense. We arrived at parking lot 11, where visibility was virtually zero in places, but the fog cleared every now and then. So we quickly slipped …

So, on our first day at Lake Ossiach, we went on a hike. We drove up the Villach Alpine Road. From there, we walked to the Dorbatsch summit cross and stopped at the summit house for an apple strudel. We hiked the Alpine route, which was really challenging.
I highly recommend it.

Today we escaped the high fog to get to our local mountain, the Dobratsch, early. With a bright blue sky and glorious sunshine, we went from the Rosstratte up to the viewing platform. An incredible natural spectacle awaited us: the whole of Carinthia was covered in a thick blanket of fog, so high that only the tip of the border …
