I first walked the waterfall trail to cool off. It costs €4 to enter, but it's well worth it; everything is well laid out. After that, I zigzagged uphill. The upper part of the gorge is also equipped with walkways and stairs, making it a great place to walk and enjoy the view. The way back was more of a farm track and then descended a bit more gently than the ascent.
After a rainy morning, some exercise is needed, and the circular walk through the gorge is a perfect hike. At the starting point, there are two paths – one directly into the gorge – via a turnstile for €4. Here, the water rushes mightily, and the fine spray from the waterfall is like the rain from the morning. The second path, free of charge, leads around the entire gorge area, with steep paths through the forest and child-friendly information panels about the history of the gorge. The viewing point on the panoramic bridge is a perfect Instagram spot, but the meter-long walkways directly along the rock face are also impressive. It's a miracle that you can walk here for free.
On the last day of our Garmisch stay, a visit to the Leutasch Geisterklamm was on the agenda 📃. The gorge🏞 can be accessed both from the Bavarian mountain village⛰️🏘 Mittenwald and from Leutasch🏘 in Tyrol. ☝🏼 We chose the Mittenwald variant and used a paid parking lot 🅿️ on the outskirts. Unfortunately, the waterfall kiosk 🛖 and the waterfall trail 🌊, which is supposed to be particularly worth seeing 🤩, were closed 😪. From the kiosk🛖 you follow the Koboldsteig to the right, which leads you up like a serpentine↗️, until you finally reach the impressive😱 panorama bridge🌉, past the 👂 waterfall🌊 you can hear. From the bridge you get an impressive view 👀 into the gorge 🏞. We continued on the Klammgeistweg, which consists almost exclusively of steel construction attached to the rocks. Since the rain ☔️🌧 started at the end of the gorge, we chose the quick way back 🔙 via Gasthof Gletscherschliff and past the kiosk 🛖 again. Before we crossed the finish line🏁🚙 we visited a café in the town center🏘☕️🥐 before we let the short day of hiking🚶🏼♀️🚶🏼♂️🎒 come to an end😊.
Starting from Mittenwald, you have two options for going through the gorge. We chose the steep zigzag path and only discovered the entrance to the deeper area of the gorge at the end. This is chargeable, but worth it and leads to the large waterfall. The freely accessible path through the gorge is located very high and leads most of the time over gratings. Nevertheless, a unique experience and worth a visit.
On Sunday, with little sleep and before we drove home, we wanted to do something. We had a short chat over breakfast and quickly agreed: we would hike through the Geisterklamm together before leaving Mittenwald. Our day tour started in a good mood and with lots of photos. The path led steeply uphill and after a short time we reached the Geisterklamm. The landscape was simply beautiful and the autumn colors gave the whole thing a very special atmosphere. Before we knew it, we had unfortunately already reached the end of the gorge. From the Geisterklamm we were thrilled by the views over the state border, the beautiful mountains and the bright autumn colors. Monday was definitely not welcome! 🤣🥰
Off to the Leutauscher Geisterklamm (Ghost Gorge), a short distance along the Way of St. James. It's a superbly maintained gorge with two beautiful panoramic bridges and numerous waterfalls beneath the elevated footpaths. A definite recommendation for anyone stopping around Mittenwald. We then hiked back across the Austrian border. Several hiking options are available.
nice walk, just a shame that the cafe and kiosk were closed. You should have a good level of fitness You should also not be afraid of heights, the gorge is crossed by relatively narrow footbridges We even met hikers with dogs, it didn't look like the dogs were comfortable, but there were no signs anywhere Otherwise, if you can manage it, it's an impressive walk
