Castles on the Bröl and Sieg rivers

Mountain biking

On the 40-kilometer tour from Hennef to Schladern, picturesque riverside bike paths and fairytale castles await you. The varied route offers gentle, steep climbs, and exhilarating descents.

After about 15 kilometers, you'll reach Herrnstein Castle. Shortly after, you can cool your feet in the Bröl River. The next castle isn't far behind, but only a ruin remains of Herrenbröl Castle.

Now begins the longest climb of the tour, which, however, isn't particularly steep and therefore very pleasant to ride, taking you all the way to Hohe Wäldchen. From here, on clear days, you can see as far as the Siebengebirge Mountains.

Prepare for a steep descent that will have you racing to just before your destination. But it's worth the quick climb to reach the final castle. From the Windeck Castle ruins, you'll enjoy a magnificent view over the Windeck region and feel as if you've been transported back in time.

You can return to the starting point by train from Schladern station (RE8, S12 and S19) or on the Sieg cycle path.

Herrenbröl Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

On the outskirts of Ruppichteroth fall directly on the main road, the remains of an old castle in the eye. It is the ruins of the castle Herrenbröl, which was probably built in the 13th century in the valley of Waldbrölbach as a knight's seat. The listed, formerly square castle is freely accessible to visitors. On its south side was once a moat, which existed as a pond in the mid-19th century. Obtained are 7m high remains of the castle tower and ruins of castle buildings, a ca. 23m long castle wall, a brick vaulted cellar as well as wall foundations and the fountain, a simple quarry stone building from the 13th century.

Hohes Wäldchen Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Hohe Wäldchen forest is 378 meters high. In good weather, you can enjoy the best views of the Siebengebirge and Westerwald Mountains from here.

The area was used for military purposes until the end of the 1980s (as an air defense radar station) and has been a nature reserve for several years. The traces of that time are still clearly visible, but the buildings have been demolished, and nature has reclaimed some of its original territory.

Windeck Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

It can be doubted that the RTL production “Demon Wedding” was a high point in the 800-year history of the castle. The symbol of the municipality of Windeck in the Siegtal has seen completely different things since it was first mentioned in 1174 as “Castrum novum in windeke”. The castle was destroyed several times in later centuries and threatened to deteriorate completely before the Siegkreis had the Palas wall rebuilt and the keep secured in the 1960s. Archaeological investigations uncovered a floor plan that gives an idea of the imposing dimensions of the castle.
