Cycling

This tour combines the cultural heritage of the Altmühltal valley with culinary discoveries, all along a river landscape shaped by Jurassic geology. It starts in Eichstätt, the baroque episcopal city, which immediately captures attention with Willibaldsburg Castle, the Cathedral, and its picturesque old town.

From Eichstätt, you follow the Altmühl river through the narrow valley to Dollnstein, where the Burgsteinfelsen rock towers over the town. The route continues to Wellheim with its romantic castle ruins, before you reach the Heilig Kreuz Münster in Bergen. One of the most beautiful churches in the region. Along the way, rock formations, idyllic floodplains, and small villages alternate.

Eichstätt is well connected to rail transport via a branch line to the main Ingolstadt–Treuchtlingen line. You will find several restaurants and cafés along the route. The Juraquell Fischbistro offers fresh fish from its own aquaculture, and there is even a fish vending machine stocked around the clock for a snack on the go.

Willibaldsburg, Eichstätt

Highlight • Castle

The Willibaldsburg castle towers high above Eichstätt and is visible from afar.

The castle complex was built in 1355 by Bishop Berthold Burggraf von Zollern and served as the episcopal seat until 1725. In the 17th century, the castle was converted into a representative residence.

Today, the castle houses various museums and natural science collections. There is also a beautiful castle garden, and the "Bierschänke" takes care of refreshments.

Burgstein (Dollnstein)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Here is a nice rest area with information boards and a little shade. The rock formations are great to look at and give the area a characteristic look and an almost bizarre ambience. The practically vertically sloping Burgstein is a popular training area for climbers, which is also often used and probably has a lot of difficulties to offer. Watching the boys and girls climbing up is sometimes breathtaking and you're literally worried that nothing will happen and you keep your fingers crossed for success.

View of Wellheim Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you have the most beautiful view of the ruins of Wellheim Castle, which towers high above the valley. Especially in the soft light of the late afternoon, the old walls and the hills of the Altmühltal valley really come into their own.

Fish Bistro, Juraquell Fish Farm

Highlight • Restaurant

At the Forellenzucht Juraquell fish farm, you can take a break with real added value directly on the Urdonautal cycle path. In the fish bistro, you can get trout and char, which are raised just a few steps away in their own ponds, along with a glass of wine in a cozy atmosphere. If the bistro is currently closed, the fish vending machine next door will help you out around the clock. Opening hours and the current offer can be found on the official website at juraquell.de.

The monastery church in Bergen is on the East Bavarian Way of St. James. Instead of a pilgrim stamp, there is a sticker.

Very nice hotel, in winter the fireplace room is particularly recommended, in summer the restaurant invites you for a cool refreshment with cake or ice cream. :-)

Formerly the church of the Augustinian convent dissolved in 1809. After 200 years as a warehouse and museum, the church and parts of the convent were renovated. Today the building houses the information center of the Altmühltal Nature Park.

It happened as it had to: after two kilometers, the front fender leaned towards the tire (the mount on the fork bridge had broken), and so we had to return to the bike shop in Eichstätt. So we went to the "Xterno Bikes" workshop and explained the problem. The friendly colleague said, "But I don't have the fender." I replied, …

I forgot to queue during a break. That's why I'm missing 3 kilometers. It was a wonderful tour from the hotel to Wellheim, Zell a. d. Speck, Nassenfels, Pfünz, Eichstätt, Dollenstein, Wellheim to Hard. The weather was great, not too hot and no rain. Simply great 🥰🚴🏿‍♀️🌞

The beginning of the tour is not so nice because it is on the country road, but then the tour is under nice after a short time. Up and down through the woods. In great ways. But see for yourself and take the tour.

I have already ridden parts of the route individually several times. Now first of all as a round ...
and I have to say that is my absolute favorite track. Great paths, great sights, sometimes far away from traffic.
If you take your time, this tour is a nice day to slow down :-)

Unfortunately the GPS dropped out. This tour is contained in an Altmuhltal flyer and is well signposted. It's nice to drive, except for the detour in front of Hütting, you could save yourself that, we let ourselves be navigated and fell in. The highlight for us was the Naturfreundehaus Konstein and Nassenfels Castle, and of course the Burgsteinfelsen.

Very varied round. Highly frequented Altmühltal cycle path, the natural Urdonautal and the idyllic Schuttertal are very beautiful.
