Hiking

The Goldensides Mountain Trail is an alpine hike renowned for the exceptional panoramas it offers of the Dempster Highway, the North Klondike Valley, Mount Tombstone, and the western mountains in the heart of Tombstone Territorial Park.

You can park your car a few minutes from the Tombstone campground. The trail begins by winding through shrubs. The vegetation becomes sparser, giving way to rocky slopes, alpine meadows, and vast open spaces.

The trail is easy, with a small elevation gain. From the ridges and summit, you enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding valleys, mountains, and lakes that dot the landscape.

On both the way there and back, you can admire the magnificent summer blooms and the sense of immensity that characterizes the heights of Goldensides Mountain. For this reason, the trail is particularly appreciated in late summer and autumn, when the tundra colors transform the slopes into a mosaic of golden and reddish hues.

Goldensides Mountain Trailhead

Highlight • Parking

A few years ago, the trailhead was located approximately two kilometers east and some maps may still show the location as the trailhead. The current trailhead provides an information board and a picnic bench – along with already stunning views. From here, follow a dirt road that turns into a trail.

Tombstone Territorial Park

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

Even the journey to Tombstone Park via the Dempster Highway is a small adventure. The dirt road with its many potholes should be driven with caution, especially in wet conditions. Tombstone Park as a whole is a highlight! If you are lucky enough to enjoy the park with some sun in the fall, you will be surprised by a variety of colors. The tundra has its own special charm. It would be worth exploring the park on foot over several days with the appropriate equipment. Right at the entrance to the park you can get expert advice in the visitor center. We didn't see any bears, reindeer (caribou) or moose that day, but apparently there are some in the park.

Impressive rock column

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you turn south from the Goldensides Mountain Trail, you will reach the first of two viewpoints. Here at this rocky platform, you can not only enjoy a fantastic panorama, but also a unique rock pillar. A perfect eye-catcher!

You have reached the end of the official Goldensides Mountain Trail. This viewpoint, located at the foot of Goldensides Mountain, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains, valley, and ridges surrounding you. Mount Robert Henderson and Mount Chester Henderson are two prominent features in the vicinity. Both mountains are connected by the same ridge.
