While the trail is generally considered an "easy hike" on Vashon-Maury Island, the primary route to the beach involves a significant 500-foot elevation drop. This makes the descent relatively easy, but the return journey uphill can be quite challenging. The park offers about three miles of mixed-use trails, some of which are steep hillside paths.
The main access route to the beach is a gravel road. Beyond this, you'll find steep hillside trails. The area, formerly a gravel mine, has sections with sparse trees, but also features Pacific Madrone trees and wooded areas. The shoreline itself is rocky and undeveloped, stretching for over a mile.
On clear days, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains, and Mount Rainier. The trail also offers glimpses of a salt marsh and eelgrass beds. The undeveloped, rocky shoreline is one of the longest stretches in King County along the Puget Sound.
The park's rich marine habitat means opportunities to observe great blue herons, bald eagles, and kingfishers. The waters are important for chinook salmon, and you might even spot orcas offshore, especially since the park is a crucial forage fish area for the endangered Southern Resident Orcas.
Yes, the Maury Island Marine Park, where this trail is located, is generally dog-friendly. However, always ensure your dog is on a leash and that you clean up after them to protect the natural environment and wildlife.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to access Maury Island Marine Park or its trails. It's a publicly accessible natural area.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but for the best views of Mount Rainier and the Cascades, clear days are ideal. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, while summer provides longer daylight hours. Winter hikes are possible, but be prepared for potentially wet and muddy conditions.
Parking is available at the trailhead for Maury Island Marine Park. Specific parking details can usually be found on local park websites or mapping services. It's advisable to arrive earlier on busy days, especially weekends, to secure a spot.
Yes, while the primary gravel road has a significant 500-foot elevation change, there are alternate routes within Maury Island Marine Park that are less steep but of similar length. Exploring these options can make the return journey from the beach more manageable.
As a natural area, facilities are limited. It's best to bring your own water and any other necessities. Restroom availability might be basic or non-existent, so plan accordingly before your visit.
Yes, Maury Island Marine Park offers walk-in campsites right on the water for overnight stays. This is a unique feature for those looking to extend their visit and experience the park's natural beauty more fully.
