While relatively short, the trail is described as fairly to very steep in sections and can be rocky. However, many hikers find it a delightful climb through a beautiful forest, and it's generally considered easy for a regular hiker. Concrete stairs are present as you approach the lookout.
From the James T. Saban Lookout, you'll be treated to outstanding panoramic views, primarily towards the east. On a clear day, you might even spot Devils Tower National Monument. Expect sweeping vistas of the scenic peaks of the Bighorn Mountains, including Cloud Peak, and the vast Powder River Basin.
The trail to the summit remains open, but the catwalk and the building of the historic James T. Saban Lookout were closed for structural reasons around 2017. While there are plans for repairs, the interior of the lookout is currently not accessible.
The trail is best enjoyed during the warmer months when the path is clear of snow and ice. Wildflowers can be seen in bloom along the trail during spring and early summer, adding to the scenic beauty. Always check local conditions before heading out, especially for higher elevations.
Yes, the James T. Saban Lookout Trail is located within the Bighorn National Forest, which generally allows dogs on trails. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please remember to pack out any waste.
Generally, there are no entrance fees required to access the Bighorn National Forest for day-use activities like hiking the James T. Saban Lookout Trail. However, specific activities or developed campgrounds might require fees or permits. It's always a good idea to check the official USDA Forest Service website for the Bighorn National Forest for the most current regulations.
Specific parking information for the James T. Saban Lookout Trailhead is usually available through the Bighorn National Forest service. Look for designated parking areas near the trail's starting point, which is typically well-marked. As with many popular trails, arriving earlier in the day can help secure a spot, especially during peak season.
The James T. Saban Lookout was constructed in 1942 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was originally known as the High Park Lookout. It was later renamed in honor of James T. Saban, a CCC foreman and former Forest Service ranger who tragically died fighting the Blackwater Fire in 1937. The unique stone and natural wood structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 and served as a fire detection station until the 1970s.
The trail winds through a thick forest, featuring beautiful rock formations and large heavy timber. While the path is generally clearly marked, it can be rocky in places. As you ascend, you'll also encounter concrete stairs closer to the lookout tower.
The James T. Saban Lookout is situated at an elevation of approximately 9,400 feet (2,880 meters).
The James T. Saban Lookout Trail is an out-and-back route. You hike up to the lookout and then return along the same path.
