This trail is considered difficult and strenuous, featuring a significant elevation gain of over 2,200 feet. The initial two miles to the "First Bench" are particularly challenging with numerous steep switchbacks. While demanding, it's generally well-maintained and suitable for adventurous intermediate hikers. Trekking poles are highly recommended due to the steep ascents and potential for loose rock.
The trail typically starts at the Encinoso Picnic Area. Parking is available there, but a $5 day pass is usually required. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking can fill up quickly.
Yes, a $5 day pass is generally required to access the trailhead at the Encinoso Picnic Area. This fee contributes to the maintenance of the Coconino National Forest, where the trail is located. No additional permits are typically needed for day hiking.
The trail offers evolving and spectacular views. You'll start amidst ponderosa pines and junipers, with sounds of Oak Creek. As you ascend, you'll gain panoramic vistas of the iconic Red Rock Country, Oak Creek Canyon, Coffeepot Rock, Capitol Butte, and the Verde Valley. From the summit, Sedona's highest point, you can see Oak Creek Canyon Overlook, View of Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness, and Wilson Mountain Overlook, culminating in a dramatic 2,000-foot drop-off view back into the canyon.
Spring and fall are generally the best times to hike this trail, offering more moderate temperatures. Summer can be very hot, so an early morning start is crucial if hiking during warmer months. The trail is known for offering shade in its early portions, especially during descent if timed correctly, making it a good option compared to more exposed trails.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails within the Coconino National Forest, it's always best to check current regulations. Given the trail's strenuous nature, steep sections, and potential for loose rock, ensure your dog is fit enough for the challenge and always keep them on a leash for their safety and the preservation of wildlife.
The North Wilson Mountain Trail is approximately 9.6 miles (15.5 km) round trip with an average hiking time of about 5 hours and 17 minutes. However, due to its difficult rating and significant elevation gain, allow ample time, especially if you plan to spend time enjoying the summit views.
The terrain is primarily red dirt and rock, with some steep and potentially washed-out sections. You'll encounter numerous switchbacks, especially in the lower two miles. The path transitions from shaded areas with ponderosa pines to more exposed sections with scrub and manzanita as you gain elevation, eventually leading to rocky cliffs and open vistas.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Wilson Mountain #10 and the North Wilson #123 trails. These are official trails within the area that intersect or overlap with the North Wilson Mountain Trail, offering potential variations or extensions for your hike.
This trail is often cited as one of the most diverse hikes in Sedona, offering a blend of canyons, dense woods, prairies, high desert mesas, and rocky cliffs. It provides exceptional panoramic views, considered among the best for landscape photography in the region, and offers a sense of solitude, especially if started early.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, essential items include plenty of water (there is no water available on the trail), sturdy hiking boots, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), snacks, and a map or GPS device. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability on the steep and rocky sections. Layers of clothing are also advisable due to changing temperatures with elevation.
Video of the hike here: https://youtu.be/XCHexfmOYbk?si=HtJ5exUkNkuEgDOU Day dedicated to climbing up to 2 magnificent viewpoints in Wilson Mountain. Magnificent hike, did not meet many people, saw many birds with beautiful colors. In addition to the 2 viewpoints, the climb along the large white and ochre cliffs is exceptional. Superb day!
