This loop is considered difficult and demands a good level of fitness. Hikers should be prepared for significant elevation changes, including strenuous climbs of up to 400 feet out of creek crossings, particularly along the Buck Trail. The Rough Trail lives up to its name with challenging sections, and the Koomer Ridge Trail also becomes more demanding closer to the Rough Trail. Expect varied surfaces, including rocky, root-laden paths, and some wooden steps near arches.
The full loop is approximately 22.25 km (13.8 miles) long and generally takes around 6 hours and 40 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace, the number of stops you make, and any detours to explore additional features like Hanson's Point.
Parking is available at various access points for the trails that make up this loop. A common starting point is near the Koomer Ridge Campground, which provides access to the Koomer Ridge Trail. Specific parking areas for the Rough Trail or Buck Trail can also be used depending on your planned starting point.
Generally, there are no specific hiking permits required for day use on the trails within the Red River Gorge Geological Area. However, if you plan to camp overnight, backcountry permits may be necessary. Always check the latest regulations with the Daniel Boone National Forest service or Kentucky Tourism for any updates before your visit.
The loop offers an amazing variety of scenery and notable features. Highlights include the impressive Grays Arch, a popular natural monument, and Hanson's Point, which provides spectacular panoramic views of the gorge. You'll also encounter other arches like Hidden Arch, Silver Mine Arch, and Down Under Arch, as well as beautiful sandstone cliff lines, steep ravines, and thick pine forests.
The terrain is highly varied and challenging. You will encounter numerous inclines and declines, particularly steep climbs out of creek crossings. Surfaces range from well-worn paths to rocky and root-laden sections. There are also wooden steps near some arches. Be prepared for multiple creek crossings, especially along the Rough Trail.
Spring is an excellent time to visit, as the valleys below are often brimming with wildflowers, adding vibrant color to the landscape. Fall offers beautiful foliage. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter may bring icy conditions, especially on steep sections and near creek crossings. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
Dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Red River Gorge Geological Area, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Given the difficult terrain, significant elevation changes, and potential hazards like cliffs and venomous snakes, ensure your dog is fit enough for a strenuous, long hike and that you carry enough water for both of you.
Yes, this extensive loop incorporates sections of several other official trails. You will hike along significant portions of the Rough Trail, Pinch-em Tight Trail #233, and Gray's Arch Trail #205. Additionally, parts of the larger Sheltowee Trace NRT Section 13 and Boone Hut Trail #209 overlap with the route, identifiable by white turtle blazes for the Sheltowee Trace.
Beyond the strenuous climbs and varied terrain, hikers should be mindful of potential hazards. These include steep cliffs, especially near overlooks and arch formations. The area is also home to venomous snakes, particularly copperheads, so watch your step and be aware of your surroundings. Creek crossings can be challenging, especially after heavy rains.
Given the length and difficulty, it's crucial to be well-prepared. Bring plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), high-energy snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, a first-aid kit, and appropriate footwear with good ankle support. Trekking poles can be very helpful for the steep ascents and descents. Also, consider bringing insect repellent and sun protection.
