What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The Fern Creek and Hillside Loop is beautiful year-round, but spring (March to May) is particularly rewarding. During this time, you can see vibrant California poppies and trillium in bloom, and the redwood forest is lush. Fall also offers pleasant hiking conditions. To avoid crowds, consider visiting on weekdays or arriving early in the morning.

What is the terrain like on the Fern Creek and Hillside Loop?

The terrain is varied and scenic. You'll hike through dense redwood forests with abundant ferns and moss, often crossing babbling creeks via footbridges. While some sections are relatively flat, particularly along Fern Creek, the Hillside trail can feature steeper inclines, narrow dirt paths, and occasional tree roots. The landscape can transition to chaparral and open grasslands at higher elevations.

Is this trail suitable for families with children?

Yes, certain segments of the Fern Creek and Hillside Loop are suitable for all skill levels and can be very family-friendly, especially the flatter sections within the redwood groves. However, some parts of the Hillside trail can be steep, so consider the overall length and elevation changes when planning a family hike. It's an excellent way to introduce children to the magic of old-growth redwoods.

What kind of views can I expect along the way?

The loop offers diverse and stunning views. The Fern Creek section immerses you in a quiet, peaceful redwood forest, with sunlight filtering through the canopy. From the Hillside portions, you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Longer loops that incorporate higher elevations may even offer panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the Marin coastline.

Does this route intersect with other well-known trails?

Yes, the Fern Creek and Hillside Loop is part of a larger trail network. This route specifically includes sections of the Hillside Trail, Bootjack Trail, and the historic Dipsea Race route. It also incorporates parts of the Camp Eastwood Trail, offering connections to other paths within Muir Woods National Monument and Mount Tamalpais State Park.

What wildlife might I encounter on the trail?

While hiking, keep an eye out for various wildlife. You might spot Steller's jays, red-tailed hawks soaring overhead, and deer foraging in the undergrowth. The dense forest also provides habitat for smaller creatures. Remember to observe wildlife from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural environment.

Are there any amenities or facilities near the trailhead?

Near the Muir Woods National Monument entrance, where the loop typically begins, you'll find restrooms and a visitor center. There is also a gift shop and a cafe for refreshments. For more extensive amenities like additional cafes, pubs, or accommodation, you would need to venture into nearby towns such as Mill Valley.

How can I avoid the busiest times on the Fern Creek and Hillside Loop?

On our trip to the USA we made a short stop at Muir Woods north of San Francisco. The giant sequoias are worth seeing and longer trails are also possible. However, since we have a tight travel schedule, we limit ourselves to short runs.
