The trailhead is located in the Superstition Mountains, near Apache Junction, Arizona. Parking is typically available at the trailhead, offering convenient access to the route.
The initial section is an easy walk through the desert with a gradual incline. However, the last quarter to third of a mile leading up to the cave is significantly more challenging, involving a steep incline, loose rocks, and moderate rock scrambling. While parts are easy, the final ascent requires good balance and proper footwear, making it a moderate to difficult overall experience.
The trail starts relatively flat but is rocky from the beginning, requiring careful foot placement. As you progress, the path narrows and becomes even rockier. The major elevation gain occurs closer to the cave, where it becomes steep, narrow, and involves scrambling over loose scree and boulders. Expect rocky terrain throughout, with a particularly strenuous final section.
The total hiking time for the round trip usually ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on your pace and how long you spend at the cave.
Along the route, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the Superstition Mountains and a dense 'garden of saguaro cactuses.' From the Broadway Cave itself, you're treated to panoramic views of Apache Junction, Mesa, and even parts of Phoenix, making it an excellent spot for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset.
The Broadway Cave is a large, natural formation approximately 20 feet high and 30 feet wide, offering shade and a cool respite. Inside, a small tunnel suggests past mining activity, adding a touch of historical intrigue. The expansive views from the cave are a significant payoff for the challenging climb.
This route is appreciated for its lower traffic compared to more famous trails in the region, often offering a greater sense of solitude during your hike.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Jacob's Crosscut, Jacob's Crosscut #58, and Monument Canyon Trail.
While the trail is generally accessible for dogs, the steep, rocky, and scrambling sections, especially near the cave, can be challenging for some pets. Ensure your dog is accustomed to rugged terrain and bring plenty of water for them.
The cooler months, typically fall through spring (October to April), are ideal for hiking in Arizona's desert. Summers can be extremely hot, making early morning or late afternoon hikes necessary if you visit during that season.
Generally, no permits or fees are required for day hiking in the Superstition Wilderness. However, it's always a good idea to check with the local land management agency for any updated regulations before your visit.
