The main route, which is about 4.2 km (2.6 miles) roundtrip to Eagle Lake, generally takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. However, the total time can vary depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views at the waterfalls and Eagle Lake.
The terrain varies significantly. You'll encounter sections with lovely stone stairs cut into rock walls, as well as uneven ground with sharp and jagged rocks, especially as you ascend. There's also a steel footbridge crossing Eagle Creek. Good hiking boots are essential due to the slippery rocks and varied surfaces.
The initial hike to the Lower and Upper Eagle Falls is often considered easy to moderately difficult and can be family-friendly, though it does involve many steps and an uphill climb. The extension to Eagle Lake is more challenging and generally rated as moderately difficult, requiring more effort and significant elevation gain. It's best for beginners to stick to the falls section.
The trail offers numerous highlights. You'll start near the Eagle Falls Trailhead and View of Emerald Bay, then encounter the impressive Upper Eagle Falls. Continuing on, you'll be treated to a View of Eagle Lake, a picturesque glacial lake, and enjoy Stunning Mountain Scenery throughout.
The falls are best viewed in May or June when snowmelt is at its peak, providing the most dramatic cascades. Visiting during sunrise is also recommended for a golden glow over the waterfall and fewer crowds. While popular year-round, be prepared for snow and ice in winter months.
Parking is available near the trailhead, but it's extremely popular. Parking lots fill up very quickly, especially during peak season. To ensure you find a spot and avoid crowds, it's highly recommended to arrive early in the morning.
A wilderness permit is required for day hikes into the Desolation Wilderness, which begins past Eagle Lake. If you plan to continue beyond Eagle Lake, make sure to obtain the necessary permit beforehand. No permit is needed for just hiking to Eagle Falls and Eagle Lake.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Eagle Falls Trail. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please remember to pack out any waste to help keep the trail clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Eagle Falls Trail. However, sections of the Eagle Lake Trail and Eagle Trail also overlap with this route, especially as you head towards Eagle Lake and beyond into the Desolation Wilderness.
Given the varied terrain and potential for slippery rocks, sturdy hiking boots are a must. Bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days, as there is no potable water available on the trail. Layers of clothing are advisable due to changing mountain weather, and don't forget sun protection and snacks.
This trail is renowned for its iconic waterfalls, including the 170-foot Lower Eagle Falls, and unparalleled panoramic views of Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe. It also serves as a gateway to the Desolation Wilderness, offering access to other alpine lakes for longer adventures. The reflection of mountains in Eagle Lake is a particularly stunning sight.
