This circular route begins at one of the most important Renaissance monuments, Villa d'Este, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. Before setting off on your bike ride, visit its extraordinary gardens. You can reach the starting point by regional train from Rome.

Leaving Tivoli, you'll descend and immediately reach the second villa on this route: Hadrian's Villa, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Park your bike and embark on this journey back in time: among Egyptian-inspired canopic jars, thermal baths, and views where water, architecture, and the hilly landscape offer a unique experience.

You return to Tivoli along a scenic provincial road that runs alongside the Monte Catillo Nature Reserve. Just before reaching the city, a lookout point allows you to observe the Villa Gregoriana waterfall in all its beauty.

Canopus, Villa Adriana

Highlight • Historical Site

Hadrian's Villa is a marvelous example of imperial architecture. It was built by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, reflecting his cosmopolitan spirit, such as the evocative canopic jar, inspired by the one in Alexandria, Egypt. The villa is striking for its incredible ingenuity in the use of water and its spectacular architectural beauty.

Mausoleum of the Plautii

Highlight • Historical Site

The Mausoleum of the Plauzi (or Mausoleum of the Plautii), near Tivoli, is a monumental tomb dating back to the very early 1st century AD. Also used by descendants, the mausoleum – a tall cylinder covered in travertine – today has a profoundly changed appearance compared to antiquity due to the fact that in the 15th century it was transformed into a tower to protect the nearby Ponte Lucano over the Aniene.
