On this tour, we'll accompany you on a discovery of the Grecìa Salentina, following a simple loop rich in history. Depart from the Galugnano train station and head south along the Lecce-Santa Maria di Leuca stretch. Reach Sternatia, one of the towns where the Griko dialect is still most alive. Cross the town and pass by the castle, a reminder of the strategic role it played between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, up until the Aragonese expedition against the Turkish siege of Otranto.

Continue along secondary roads and then take the provincial road towards Martano. Enter the historic center and stop at the Palazzo Baronale, originally an Aragonese castle and transformed over time into a noble residence. Observe the façade, the portal, and, if possible, visit the interior. Resume your ride toward Carpignano Salentino and continue north to Melendugno, where a stop in front of the 16th-century castle is a must, even though it cannot be visited inside.

Complete the loop by passing through Calimera. Cross Piazza del Sole, observe the Church of San Brizio and the courtyard houses that tell the story of the town's community life. Before returning to Galugnano, stop at the Curti Vecchi Menhir: it's one of the most evident signs of the cultural stratification of this area. A tour suitable for everyone, ideal for a leisurely ride and a true understanding of the territory you're traversing.

It's the village of the Grecìa Salentina area with the highest percentage of people speaking griko. The meaning of the word infact comes from 'Sterna' (cistern, well) and 'Thia' (sacred) which indicates that probably in the past there were wells or sacred cisterns where religious ceremonies were held.
Since 1100 was under the Norman , the Swabian and had a certain importance also during the Angevins that in 1334 fortified it with solid walls. From the castle of Sternatia, seat of the Aragonese troops commanded by Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, of which expedition freed Otranto from the siege of the Turks in 1480.

The origins of the structure date back to the end of the XIII century. In 1480, following the Turkish offensive on Otranto, the Castle of Martano, in which the inhabitants had taken refuge, also suffered considerable damage. Fortunately, the following year, thanks to the reconquest by the Aragonese, the fortress was rebuilt and enlarged. The new construction was joined to the ancient city walls and correlated with five towers, of which only two have survived until today. In the second half of the 1600s, the Trani family transformed the Aragonese Castle into a Baronial Palace by renovating the old façade and creating an entrance door embellished with inclined ashlars. Inside the building, it's possible to admire the remarkable decorations of the staircase, as well as the fascinating majolica flooring and the frescoed vaults. Further stylistic changes and enrichments have continued over the last two centuries in conjunction with the succession of various noble families.

It's a small town of just over seven thousand inhabitants. It belongs, together with the municipalities of Martignano, Sternatia, Zollino, Martano, Castrignano de 'Greci, Corigliano d'Otranto, Soleto and Melpignano, to the so-called area of "Grecìa Salentina", a sub-area of the province of Lecce where remains alive in some traditions the Greek-Byzantine culture spread in Puglia between the sixth and twelfth centuries and in particular the dialect, now considered as a real language, the 'griko'. The name of the town infact comes from 'Kalimera', meaning "good morning" in Greek. After all, the Byzantine influence continued to exist in the religious rite until 1663 and this also allowed the language to be preserved.

Here, in the main square 'Piazza del Sole', stands the baroque Church of San Brizio, dedicated to the saint patron and built during the XVII century. All around, several examples of courtyards houses.
