This loop trail is an immersive experience in the history and agricultural landscape of Basilicata. The adventure begins at Borgo Taccone, where the route intercepts the historic Via Francigena, connecting ancient rural areas.

The effort of the climb is rewarded by a unique panoramic view of the cultivated fields, mainly of quality cereals, that extend over the surrounding hills. The ground is varied, passing through dirt tracks, gravel, and paved sections, offering you direct contact with the environment.

Continuing uphill, you reach places of great historical-religious interest. The Chapel of the Madonna di Monteserico, a simple structure that holds great spiritual value for the community. The chapel, with its barrel vault, once housed a miraculous painting of the Annunciation and hides an ancient ossuary inside.

A short walk away, you find the imposing Monteserico Castle, a Swabian manor of medieval origin, dating back to the 11th century and which probably served as a garrison in the Byzantine era, dominating the area.

In addition to history, the itinerary offers you the opportunity to appreciate the nature of the area, characterized by Turkey oaks and Mediterranean scrub. Pay attention to the sky: the area is a privileged observation point for birds of prey, particularly the red kite and the black kite.

You are moving through a landscape marked by the Rignosa Canal and where you also notice old rural dwellings built with funds from the Marshall Plan. Being a loop route, after reaching the highest and most significant points, the road leads you back to the starting point of Borgo Taccone, completing your exploration.

Chapel of Our Lady of Monteserico

Highlight • Religious Site

The Chapel of the Madonna di Monteserico, located on the esplanade of the ancient castle, is a small rural sanctuary linked to the local popular devotion. Once the hub of the village's religious life, it housed an image of the Virgin believed to be miraculous, and even today, Mass is celebrated there once a year in her honor.

Monteserico Castle

Highlight • Castle

Built in Norman times, it is located on a peak (Monte Serico 550 m.s.l.m.) about 15 km from Genzano di Lucania. The castle dominates a vast valley which was an important hinge between the territories of the Bradano dominated by the Byzantines and the northern territories of Basilicata dominated by the Lombards and Normans. Conceived by the Normans as a defensive system, it was the scene of battle between Normans and Byzantines in which the latter were defeated. In the Middle Ages it was also a refuge for the Basilian monks.
