Hiking
Embark on a difficult 9.0-mile (14.5 km) hike along the historic Via delle Genti, connecting Cannobio to Cannero Riviera. This challenging route features a significant elevation gain of 2345 feet (715 metres), taking approximately 4 hours and 52 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you'll traverse ancient cobblestone paths winding through dense chestnut forests, offering glimpses of Lake Maggiore and the charming town of Cannobio below. The trail's varied terrain leads you past the small village of Molineggi, known for its unique metal sculptures, before reaching the impressive Carmine Superiore Church, a medieval landmark with panoramic views.
You can begin your hike in Cannobio, where a large car park is available for convenience. Alternatively, consider arriving by boat from other towns around Lake Maggiore, adding a scenic start to your adventure. Remember to bring enough drinking water, as a stone fountain along the way is suitable only for refreshing arm dips. This route is best enjoyed during pleasant weather to fully appreciate the lake views and historic sites.
This ancient traders' route offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, following an important commercial path that once connected Italy and Switzerland. The trail provides a glimpse into the region's past, with its well-preserved cobblestone sections and medieval architecture. After completing your hike in Cannero Riviera, you can explore local eateries or simply relax by the lake, reflecting on the journey through this historically significant landscape.

What a wonderful tour in the best weather - even the first steps made you look forward to what was to follow: the views were terrific! and stony paths along cooling stone walls. Today with photogenic 🦎 and much to the delight of A. also 🐑🐑. We happened to see Carmine Superiore on TV and were delighted that we stopped by here today. Such a beautiful, medieval village with alleys, abandoned houses and a beautiful little church....👌 You can only get there on foot and you will be absolutely rewarded. We mastered the quite steep climb afterwards 🥵 very well 😊 The very good ice cream in Cannobio at the end of the promenade made this day complete.
Today on the way at Lago Maggiore, more precisely in the picturesque town of Cannopio🇮🇹. From there by boat 🛥️ to Cannero. Then walk back along the high trail to Cannopio. A picturesque, uniquely beautiful, wildly romantic area in which to surround oneself, a dream!
Cannobio and Cannero Riviera are two of the most beautiful places in this corner of Lake Maggiore and absolutely worth seeing. The absolute highlight of the route is Carmine Superiore. Great old houses and from the chapel you have a great view of the lake. Really worth seeing with a special magic✨From here towards Cannobio the path is a challenge, rocky and steep, partly with wooden stairs that require big steps😬my dog had to give it his all💪🏻The town of Molineggi also has a special flair and is the reward after the climb, from there it's downhill. We took the ferry back🛥️ via Luino to Cannero Riviera to the car. Unfortunately the bus doesn't run on the weekend so we were on the road longer than expected.
Great tour, very demanding. But the data is not correct ... It was 3 hours, 10 km average 3.4
Definitely a pleasant route. A couple of notes: excursion with little exposure to the sun (not ideal in late autumn) and with few panoramic points; not a circular route and which ends... in nowhere (I didn't even realize I had reached the end). Tip: continue for a few minutes to the end of the path. You will then arrive at the Lake Maggiore state road shortly after Cannero and right in front of stop 164 of the VCO Trasporti line. The bus runs approximately every 60 minutes and, for just over €2, takes you back to Cannobio, a few steps from the departure car park
Cannero - Cannobio halfway up: Mediterranean vegetation and breathtaking views of Lake Maggiore.
Cannobio with its beautiful promenade is definitely a visual highlight. Be sure to order an ice cream 🍨😁 refreshed, you can then set off for the almost deserted mountain village of Carmine Superiore. It's quite a steep climb, but there are lovely, shady old stone paths. You pass a few old ruins and then the view of the village opens up. The church and the old streets have a lovely charm. We leave the village and first walk over a hill and then downhill to Cannero Riviera, the northernmost place in Europe where lemons grow all year round. Our goal, however, is the public beach 😁☀️ after a refreshing swim in the lake, we go to the boat harbor and from there take the boat back to Cannobio. You once again have a great view of the castle in the water.
