This trail is classified as difficult, requiring a good to very good level of fitness. It features steep and demanding sections, especially between Porta Renzola and Porta Kempel, which include narrow, steep, and exposed ridges. Hikers should be prepared for a long trek with significant elevation gain.
The terrain is varied, consisting of gravel, rocks, and dirt paths. While generally easy to follow without technical climbing, some parts demand sure-footedness and sturdy footwear. You'll also encounter interesting karst features like sinkholes.
The trail typically starts from the vicinity of Lower Larici Mountain Hut (Malga Larici di Sotto). Parking is usually available near this area, which serves as a common trailhead for routes to Cima Portule.
The route is approximately 13.7 km (8.5 miles) long with an estimated duration of 5 hours and 30 minutes of moving time. Typical loop routes can last between 5 to 7 hours in total, depending on your pace and stops.
Along the way, you'll pass several notable points including Lower Larici Mountain Hut, Porta Renzola (1,949 m), and the Portule Peak itself. Other highlights include a View of the Valsugana Valley, the Cemetery of Larches and Mountain Pines, and Cableway Ruins, remnants of its historical significance.
The best time to hike is generally during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the trail is free of snow and the weather is more stable. This allows for safe passage and optimal enjoyment of the panoramic views.
While specific leash requirements may vary, dogs are generally welcome on trails in this region. It's always advisable to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers, and to carry waste bags.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking the Cima Portule Trail or other public trails within the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni. However, always check local regulations before your visit, especially for protected areas.
Yes, the route to Cima Portule also passes through sections of the Sentiero della Pace nell'Altopiano dei Sette Comuni and the historic Erzherzog Eugen Straße, offering connections to other routes in the area.
It is strongly advised to avoid this trail in winter conditions unless you possess extensive winter mountaineering experience. The steep, exposed sections and potential for snow and ice make it significantly more hazardous during colder months.
From the summit of Cima Portule, you can expect spectacular 360-degree panoramic views. On clear days, you'll see the vast Asiago plateau to the south, the Valsugana valley to the north, and potentially the Lagorai mountain range, the Dolomites (like the Pale di San Martino), and even the distant Venetian lagoon.
Splendid day with unseasonal weather... the loop is easily completed in 6 hours... Chanel and I took 7 but with many stops to enjoy the moments... I prefer it clockwise because going down from Monte Kempel to Porta Renzola destroys my legs...
Parked just below Rifugio Larici. Long cart track up to Bocchetta Portule (1937 altitude) (6 km/2 hours). Climb left along sent. 826 simple/light between mountain pines and sinkholes (1 hour). From Cima Portule (2310m) we descended to the col (Porta Renzola 1950m) and then went up again via Cima Larici. 2033 m. These two sections are quite steep and with slippery spots. Excursion without particular difficulties if done in this sense.
