This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from Passo Gardena, which serves as a crucial connection point between Val Gardena and Val Badia. Parking is available at Passo Gardena. You can also reach higher elevations via cable cars from Val Gardena to access various starting points for hikes in the area.
While dogs are generally permitted on trails in the Dolomites, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially within the Puez-Odle Nature Park, to protect wildlife and other hikers. Be mindful of rocky terrain and potential encounters with livestock.
The best time to hike this route is generally from late spring (June) through early autumn (September/October). During these months, the weather is most favorable, and mountain huts are typically open. Early morning or evening hours can offer particularly special atmospheres with captivating sunsets over the Sella Group and Cir Peaks.
No, there are no specific entrance fees or permits required to hike within the Puez-Odle Nature Park. However, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors are expected to respect park regulations, stay on marked trails, and leave no trace to preserve its natural beauty.
The terrain is highly varied. You'll encounter well-maintained country lanes, meadows, natural soil, and solidified gravel on easier sections. As the route progresses, expect uneven, rocky, and unpaved ground, with sections featuring roots and stones. There can be moderate ascents and descents, and massive rock formations are common.
The route offers magnificent scenery and several points of interest. You'll pass the Passo Gardena viewpoint, the Gardena Pass, and the Grödner Pass / Ju de Frara. Keep an eye out for the Bench With View of the Sella Group, a Wooden Candle Sculpture, and a Carved Wooden Fountain with Painted Stones. You'll also be near the Under the Dantercepies Gondola and the Cir Gondola Lift.
Yes, the Val Gardena and Alta Badia region is known for its numerous mountain huts (Rifugi). While this specific route is a day hike, many huts are scattered throughout the area, providing opportunities for rest, refreshments, and often stunning backdrops. It's advisable to check their operating hours, especially outside peak season.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that are part of the MTB Sella Ronda ACW, Sentiero Italia - Tappa C21N, Alta Via n. 2 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 2, and the Dream path Munich-Venice. Other intersecting paths include MTB Sella Ronda CW, MTB Selva - Dantercepies - Passo Gardena, MTB Raida dl Jëuf de Frea, Cir Trail Gravel, Frara, and Cir Giara.
The Val Gardena to Alta Badia via Passo Gardena route is rated as 'moderate' difficulty. While the region offers many easy options suitable for beginners or families, this specific route involves some elevation gain and varied terrain, making it better suited for hikers with some experience and good physical condition. Easier paths in the area often consist of well-maintained country lanes or meadows.
From Passo Gardena, you're treated to panoramic views of the majestic Sella Group to the south, the sharp Cir Peaks to the north, Sassolungo to the west, and the peaks of Val Badia to the east. The area encompasses the wild and beautiful Puez-Odle Nature Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its jagged peaks, dramatic rock formations, and sweeping alpine meadows.
For this moderate hike, you should bring sturdy hiking boots suitable for varied terrain, layers of clothing to adapt to changing mountain weather, rain gear, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), sufficient water, and snacks. A map or GPS device (like komoot's app) is recommended, along with a basic first-aid kit. Trekking poles can be helpful on uneven sections.
5th day of the hiking week. Only a short tour due to bad weather. Rest with cable car and 🚍
Unfortunately, it's the last tour. After yesterday's rain, today the weather is perfect. From the Dantercepies mountain station, I walked to the Jimmi Hut. I took a short coffee break to enjoy the views. I continued on trail 8 to Col Pradat. Along the way, I saw marmots (same spot as in 2022) and inspected edelweiss. I enjoyed my last day at the hut. End of the tour. Down by cable car and back by bus.
