This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from a parking lot located at approximately 1,000 meters elevation. This is your primary access point for beginning the ascent via Route 414.
The hike is approximately 13.75 km (8.5 miles) long and generally takes around 7 hours and 36 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and stops.
The terrain is quite varied. It begins with a well-maintained forest path, transitions to sections that can be partly overgrown with grass and shrubs, then opens to a flower meadow. Higher up, you'll encounter a gravel trail with potentially loose scree. A significant feature is the easy via ferrata (rated A/B) or easy climbing sections (I or II) starting around 1,650 meters, which continue up to the summit ridge.
This is a difficult hike with significant elevation gain and technical sections, including an easy via ferrata. It's best suited for hikers with good fitness and some alpine experience. While experienced and sure-footed climbers might manage the via ferrata without specialized gear, a via ferrata set is strongly recommended for children or less experienced individuals.
The trail offers continuously changing and rewarding scenery. You'll repeatedly see the towns of Amaro and Tolmezzo, and the highway in the valley. As you gain elevation, views expand to surrounding peaks. Key highlights include the Monte Amariana — Summit and Madonna Statue, the adventurous Via Ferrata Monte Amariana, and peaceful Forest Trail sections.
Due to the technical sections, including an easy via ferrata and climbing passages, this trail may not be suitable for all dogs. If you plan to bring your dog, ensure they are agile, experienced with alpine terrain, and consider if they can safely navigate the secured climbing sections. Specialized gear for dogs might be necessary.
The trail is best hiked during the warmer months, typically from late spring through early autumn, when the snow has melted and conditions are generally stable. This allows for enjoyment of the flower meadows and clearer panoramic views. Winter hiking would require specialized equipment and experience due to snow and ice conditions.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Monte Amariana Summit Trail from Amaro (via Route 414).
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other trails. You will find it intersects with parts of the via ferrata dell'Amariana, Troj di Cjar Martins, and Via Castello.
From the summit of Monte Amariana, at 1,905 meters, you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic vista. You can see the Friulian plain, the Coglians mountain range, and on very clear days, even the sea. The 360-degree views are uninterrupted and truly spectacular.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, it's essential to pack appropriately. Bring sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and layers of clothing. If you plan to tackle the via ferrata, a helmet, harness, and via ferrata set are highly recommended, especially if you are less experienced.
